Shaffer Sits 5th in Points Coming into Night Two

Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusives. TULARE Ca. (October 19, 2018) – Night two of the 25th Annual Trophy Cup at the Thunderbowl Raceway is underway and the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer comes into the night sitting 5th in overall points.

The way Trophy Cup is formatted is meant to resemble an old Super Modified format. The Super modified scene in California was huge throughout the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s until Sprint Cars came to prominence. Back then the field was always completely inverted. That is what Trophy Cup Dave Puseteri says Sprint Car Racing was missing. This is why the Format you’ll see is predicated on passing points and the fastest drivers always start in the back, of every race. This also bases main Event transfer on heat winner and highest point earner from said heat. The format here see’s that if you run well, you start in the back, and have the highest chance of racking up points.

The Steel City Outlaw managed to come away with quick time last night in Group B. He’s already established himself as a prominent contender despite only racing at Thunderbowl Raceway a handful of times over the last half decade. After running Quick time Shaffer followed it up with a direct main event transfer out of the heat by earning the most points with his passes.

Coming into the opening night feature Shaffer accounted for second in points behind Shane Golobic. The top two qualifiers would see themselves start on row six from 11th and 12th respectively under the Trophy Cup format.

The main event took off and Shaffer started a fierce charge. It didn’t take him long to move toward the top 5. Early cautions allowed the field to bunch up and give the drivers who started further back an opportunity to get into the mix.

Shaffer’s run stalled midway through the race as two local drivers found their way to the front and moved him back a couple spots. The Steel City Outlaw managed to hang on to 7th place after 30-laps.

With his consistency throughout all of night one he accumulated enough points to sit in the top 5 coming into night two. The way the Trophy Cup is formatted picking the best points Night of the first two ensures that Shaffer will be in contention heading into Saturday nights finale. Tonight’s race can be used as a test session to get things even more dialed in on Larry Moles’ Southern Pacific Farms number 01 entry.
