Canfield, Parshall and Wharton Victorious On Memorial Day Weekend!
The Wingless Sprint Series, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks and Outlaw Tuners brought wild and crazy action to Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday night. After the action on the 3/8 banked clay oval, the skies lit up with a huge firework show.
Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks:
Spanaway's Tom Hecker and Shane Kerrigan of Hoquiam shared the front row of the 25 lap Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks feature. Kerrigan took the early lead from Hecker, with Taylor Miller of Westport moving into the third spot. Hoquiam driver Jason Tole was right there waiting for a mistake from Miller. Kerrigan slowly pulled away from Hecker as the battle to watch was the fourth position between Montesano's Scott Fritts and Jack Parshall of Hoquiam. After a handle of laps battling, Parshall moved into fourth. Lap 6 saw the caution come out for contact between Tole and Miller in turn one. Kerrigan had tough company on the restart as Parshall was right there to strike, moving into the second spot, and looked to take over the lead until the caution flag flew for Josh Anthony of Longview spinning in turn three on lap 7. Many cautions were seen throughout the feature, which allowed Kerrigan a chance at Parshall for the win. Multiple times Kerrigan looked to the outside of Parshall for the lead, but Parshall held on to pick up the win, Kerrigan, Tole, who rallied back after a early race incident, Fritts and Ryen Haney rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Parshall, Anthony, and Tole, with Kerrigan picking up quick time.
Wingless Sprint Series:
The Wingless Sprint Series made their first of two appearances of the 2017 season at Grays Harbor Raceway. The 30 lap feature saw Pat Canfield of Ridgefield and Sherwood, Ore driver Rob Lindsey set the front row. Canfield took the early lead, but caution came out as contact between Forrest Grove, Ore's Chris Batalgia and Lindsay Barney of Portland, Ore causing Batalgia to stop in turn one. The complete restart saw Canfield jump to the early lead with Lindsey right on his back bumper. Jake Gilman of Forrest Grove sat in the third position, looking for any mistakes by Canfield and Lindsey. A handful of cautions allowed Lindsey a few chances at Canfield for the lead, but Canfield looked strong on the low side of the raceway. Canfield also looked strong out front on a long green flag run, but had no room for error with Lindsey closing in with a handful of laps to go. Canfield held off Lindsey to pick up the Wingless Sprint Series feature. Lindsey, Lance Hallmark, Barney, and Tim Alberding rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier were Lindsey and Canfield, with Lindsey picking up quick time and the dash.
Outlaw Tuners:
A great field of Outlaw Tuners were set for their 15 lap feature, as a pair of Aberdeen drivers set the front row with Tyler Sundstrom and Ryan Onasch. Sundstrom took the early lead until a multiple car incident in turn one brought out the caution. On the restart Tenino's Josh Wharton took the early lead, with Sundstrom in the second position. Onasch brought out the second caution of the feature after spinning in turn four. Wharton led the field to the green on the second restart, and quickly jumped out front with Sundstrom looking to chase him down. The fourth position saw a battle between a pair of Shelton drivers, Dale Speas and Joseph Palmer. Both drivers raced side by side and even trading positions for multiple laps with Palmer taking the position. Speas never gave up, and looked to get the position back a few laps later. Both drivers continued to battle while going through lap traffic making for an exciting race for the fans. Wharton continued to pull away from the field and picked up the win, making it two in a row for the Tenino driver. Sundstrom, Lovell, Palmer and Speas rounded out the top five. Sundstrom and Onasch picked up heat race wins earlier in the evening.
Racing will resume next Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, and the first appearance of the Pacific Hard Top Racing Association Dwarf Cars. It will be one action packed night on the 3/8 banked clay oval. Gates will open at 5:30PM with racing at 7PM.
