Battle of the Elements Opening Night at Grays Harbor Raceway
4/20/2024
Elma, WA -
The first race of 2024 is in the books at Grays Harbor Raceway, where we battled off and on weather and a very hooked up track. Riley Scherer won the weather shortened main event of the evening in the IMCA Modifieds for the first time and was joined in victory lane by Trey Starks in the 360 division and Shane Smith in the Northwest Focus Midgets.
Jeff Westergard led the field to the green leading the first two laps then a caution and on the restart Brenton Schnitzer who started 5th took over the lead on lap 3 until he slowed on lap 8 right before the start finish line giving the lead to Riley Scherer. On the next restart on lap 9 Jeff Westergard tangled with Tyson Blood going into turn one causing Jeff Westergard to barrel roll multiple times. Before the race could be continued the rained started comiing down putting a checkered on the main event. We go back to the last completed green flag lap minus the car in the incident which gave his first IMCA Modified win to Riley Scherer. Heat race Winners went to Clyde White, Brenton Schnitzer, and Scott Miller, and the B Main went to Jason Tole
In the 360 Sprint Cars Levi Klatt and Destry Miller led the field to the green. On the 3rd start attemp Levi Klatt took the lead and led the first 5 laps and then got loose behind a lap car and the faster Trey Starks took over and sailed on to the win leading the last 15 laps. Finishing second was Levii Klatt followed by Evan Margeson, Destry Miller, and Lane Taylor who recovered after barrel rolling on the second attempted start. Starks was also quick time with heat races going too Destry Miller and Levi Klatt.
In the Northwest Focus Midgets Garrett Thomas and Alex Peck took off from the front row with Peck finally getting the advantage on lap 1 and fending off challenges from Shane Smith and Garrett Thomas and led the first 23 laps. While Peck was out front the war for second between Shane Smith and Garrett Thomas when Thomas had contact with a lapped car. On a late restart Peck held off Smith until he had trouble navigating the lapped cars and Smith was able to get by and lead the last 2 laps. Heat race winners were Smith and Pierce.
