(Kansas City, Kansas) The annual Joe Berry Clash of the B-Mods concluded on Saturday at Lakeside Speedway with 29 B-Mods, 16 Pure Stocks, 20 Stock Cars, and 14 E-Mods on hand for added purse money. The 79 entrants competed throughout the night to add to and fill the remaining starting positions for the main event starting grids.
Lakeside Speedway wishes to apologize to drivers and fans for the delays incurred during the Saturday program. There were connectivity issues at the start of the night that continued throughout the program. Lakeside Speedway recognizes these improvement opportunities and going forward will work to ensure they do not happen again, including the racing app and electrical issues incurred late in the B-Mod finale. The MyRacePass.com website is now up to date with lineups and finishes.
To start the B-Mod action, Krew Walburn, Gabriel Hodges, and Nick Drew captured heat race victories while Brad Smith led the charge for the remaining 12 cars to join the B-Mod starting grid through the night two scramble by taking the win over Scotty Allen and Kyle Henning.
With the starting grid now in place, the $3,000-to-win, 25-lap ‘Joe Berry Clash of the B-Mods’ began with Springfield’s J.C. Morton and Lakeside Speedway 2020 Champion Patrick Royalty on row one. Morton quickly established a torrid pace leading Royalty and Ethan Isaacs. Morton maintained his composure through a series of cautions and spins with Royalty doing all he could to find a way to gain on the leader. Andy Bryant and Ethan Isaacs had several thrilling laps of side-by-side action as the pair battled for the third position.
Late in the race, a grinding crash took place on the backstretch as Austin Charles incurred mechanical issues, which led to fluids being spilled on the track from the turn two area all the way down the back stretch. Charles’ car ultimately stalled on the back straightaway and was struck by Kyle Henning at speed as Henning tried to avoid contact. Although the cars made hard contact, both drivers informed officials they were okay, but each man’s car was heavily damaged in the incident.
When racing resumed after accident cleanup, Morton went back to work for the remaining laps in search of another big-money victory to add to his resume. Royalty, Bryant, and Isaacs did all they could to keep Morton in their sights but in the end, it was Morton who went on to close the weekend of events with the win. Royalty fought off a hard charge from Bryant to claim second with Bryant, Isaacs, and ninth-starting Cole Campbell rounding out the top five.
In Stock Car action, night two Mike Wahwahsuck took the heat race win ahead of Vernon Kever and Paul Carter as the final grouping of cars established starting grid positions for the $1,500-to-win 20-lap finale. Kevin Anderson and Jaylen Wettengel earned the row one starting spots from the finish of the night one scramble. Wettengel established himself as a favorite for the win based on his successful 2020 season at Lakeside Speedway in which he won multiple main events. He looked strong again at the front of the field to lead early on over Anderson, Gary Donaldson, Brett Heeter, and Kacey Shields.
Through a series of early race cautions, Wettengel maintained his edge but when the second half of the race began to unfold, it was Anderson who put the pressure on the leader as he searched for the best line of opportunity to overtake the leader. At the lap 13 marker, Anderson made his way to the front but Wettengel stayed close as the pair battled hard for the victory. Meanwhile, Kacey Shields used the high side to gain positions over the final circuits as he advanced to the top three.
Ultimately, Anderson found the exit of turn two as his opportunity to grab the lead as he and Wettengel ran side-by-side into turn three until Anderson emerged as the leader and eventual winner of the race. Wettengel had to settle for second on this night with Shields solidly rounding out the podium in third. Gary Donaldson was a consistent runner in fourth at the finish with eleventh-starting Dominic Thyfault closing out the top five with a fantastic run towards the front.
E-Mods raced for their $1,000-to-win main event with Steven Makar and Trevor Hand earning the row one starting positions after their night one scramble. Brayden Bennett was the driver who raced his way to the front of the field as he pulled away from all pursuers, distancing himself as laps clicked off throughout the race. This left Hand, Shaunie Lanning, and Brian Andrews to fight for second through fifth.
Makar was a consistent runner in second all-race long ahead of Lanning and Hand. Lanning had an outstanding run going as she fought her way to third in the rundown until her night came to a halt after contact with a turn two utility tire on the low side, Lanning was okay after the hard contact. When racing resumed, Bennett again opened his lead by a large distance with Hand now in a close battle with sixth-starting Tim Billings. Kevin White and Dakota Earls also ran closely for the fourth spot.
At the end of the 20-lap distance, it was Bennett who appeared to secure the dominating victory; however, in post-race technical inspection, his car was over 30 pounds light at the scales and he was disqualified from the finishing order. It was Steven Makar of nearby Basehor, Kansas, who was declared the winner. Billings’ outstanding run paid dividends as he advanced to second by race end. Hand finished in third, followed by seventh-starting Kevin White and ninth-starting Earls to close out the top five.
Pure Stocks joined in on the weekend action with the annual Karl Tinsley Memorial, 15-lap main event that featured a $1,200-to-win top prize with solid money throughout the field in a respectable purse that paid not just the top but all finishing positions. Lakeside Speedway Pure Stock dominator Garry Billings, Jr., opened his night with the win over Leroy Morrison and Dennie Belknap for heat race one with former champion Marshall Jewett registering an exciting win over Jason Ryun and Spencer Reiff in heat race two.
In one of the most thrilling and close finish main events of the night, Billings earned the pole position alongside of Jewett with Ryun and Belknap in row two. These four drivers quickly went to work at the front of the field with several laps of close and clean competition in search of the checkers.
While the scoring books may show Billings had a dominating night, it was anything but as Jewett kept the race interesting and close the entire race distance. A caution flag setup an even more dramatic finish as Nate Barnes also found his way towards the front with Ryun to make it a four-car run to the money. For the final two laps these drivers looked for any line or mistake by a fellow driver to claim the victory but ultimately at the finish, Billings prevailed to close a highly successful season at the speedway with the big-money triumph. Jewett was a close second as sixth-starting Barnes advanced to third with Ryun fourth and Morrison fifth.
