Kevin Swindell Charges from 20th to Seventh in Outlaw Winged Feature at Tulsa Shootout
Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 5, 2015) – Kevin Swindell entered the 30th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout with one main goal: fun.
“I wish we had some better results, but that race Saturday night ended up pretty fun,” he said.
Swindell competed in four micro sprint classes – outlaw winged, outlaw nonwing, “A” class winged and “A” class nonwing – for Pace Chassis last Wednesday through Saturday inside the River Spirit Expo Center.
The highlight of the weekend came in the outlaw winged class. Swindell rallied from seventh to second place in a heat race, but he was caught up in a crash as the green flag was waved for a qualifier.
“I was fourth in points after the heat races,” he said. “A kid drove over my front on the start of the qualifier. It knocked the nose wing off and spun me around. I went to the back and drove up to sixth.”
That forced Swindell to compete in a B Main, which he won, to advance into the Last Chance Qualifier. He placed fourth in the consolation event to transfer into the back of the feature, which he started on the outside of the 10th row.
“We finally got the car where it needed to be in the feature and we were able to pass as many as I could,” he said. “It took a while for the track to widen out where you could race.”
Swindell rallied from 20th to a seventh-place result, which was his best finish of the weekend.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to rebound from tough luck in the other classes. Swindell finished fourth in a stacked outlaw nonwing heat race and he maneuvered from 11th to sixth in a B Main, but was shy of a transfer.
He earned a runner-up result after starting fifth in an “A” class winged heat, but was disqualified for being too light at the scales. After maneuvering from ninth to third place in a C Main, the team decided to scratch from a B Main.
Swindell also won his “A” class nonwing heat race after starting on the pole, which buried him in a qualifier because of a lack of passing points.
“The biggest thing is you’ve got to get drawn in well,” he said. “You can’t be on the front row of a heat race. It’s a lot about the luck of the draw and if it’s anywhere remotely narrow on the track it’s almost impossible to pass.”
Swindell finished fifth in an “A” class nonwing B Main to miss a transfer by three spots.
He will return to River Spirit Expo Center Jan. 13-17 for the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals, which he won four consecutive years prior to a runner-up finish last season.
