Inside Line Promotions – LEMOORE, Calif. (May 26, 2014) – Giovanni Scelzi had a roller-coaster weekend during the Tachi Palace Nationals last Friday and Saturday at Lemoore Raceway.
Scelzi scored a pair of top fives, but also had two DNFs while doing double duty at the marquee micro sprint event.
“I wasn’t really on as a driver,” he said. “The car was always on. I just made little mistakes. We’ll get back to winning races in no time.”
The competition began last Friday with Scelzi qualifying second quickest in the nonwing outlaw class and third quickest in the outlaw division. That started Scelzi on the pole of his heat race in each class.
Scelzi finished second in his outlaw heat race to advance to the main event. He won his nonwing outlaw heat to make the dash, where he placed third.
Unfortunately, part of the front end broke during the outlaw main event and Scelzi went from competing for a top five to out of the race early.
Scelzi was on a mission in the nonwing outlaw main event.
“We went slider for slider for probably 10 laps,” he said of his battle for the lead. “We were in lapped traffic for a while. I led four or five laps. We were a little loose and I couldn’t get as good of drive off the corners.”
Scelzi ended with a runner-up finish.
On Saturday, the team returned to Lemoore Raceway for the second half of the doubleheader.
Scelzi timed in 14th quickest in outlaw qualifying and he was seventh quickest in the nonwing outlaw class. After advancing through his heat race in both classes, Scelzi lined up 12th in the outlaw main event.
“It took rubber on the first lap,” he said. “We were the first ones to find the rubber. We went from 12th to fourth in about two laps and then rode around there.”
Scelzi ended the main event with a fourth-place result, which was his second top five of the weekend.
In nonwing outlaw action, Scelzi started seventh and was quickly in contention for a top five before his race ended early because of the throttle sticking.
“We were racing for fourth place and it stuck one time and a yellow came out and I got it back,” he said. “We were sliding back and forth for third when it happened again and I couldn’t pull the throttle back.”
This Saturday, Scelzi will make his season debut at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif.
