Starks Strong Throughout First Half of Pennsylvania Speedweek

Inside Line Promotions – ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (July 5, 2017) – Trey Starks produced a strong first half to his inaugural Pennsylvania Speedweek.
“I’m really, really happy with everything,” he said. “Our only hiccup was a DNF in the B Main while we were leading at Path Valley. We’re sixth overall in points after Monday’s race.”
Starks and Gobrecht Motorsports opened the marquee week of racing last Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, where Starks set quick time during qualifying for the first time in his career.
“I felt really comfortable from the time the night started,” he said. “I felt great in hot laps and we were real good in qualifying. We were solid in our heat and had a good starting spot in the main event. We were really good early, but faded a bit toward the end.”
Starks finished where he started – fourth – in a heat race to lock into the feature inversion, which lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event. He quickly advanced into third place before an ill-handling race car relegated him to a sixth-place result, which was tied for his career-best finish at the track.
Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., hosted the second Speedweek race. Starks timed in 10th quickest and he won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. Starks again made the feature inversion and this time started the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We drew a really bad number and were the last car out for qualifying,” he said. “Going 10th quick was pretty good for where we went out. It set us up and they drew a good number for the feature inversion. We jumped out and led early for about 10 laps, but like the previous night we faded toward the end. I jumped the cushion midway though and lost a few spots. Overall, it was good to lead some laps, especially against such a stout field.”
Starks held on for a 10th-place result.
He then made his debut at Path Valley Speedway Park in Spring Run, Pa., on Sunday.
“The track was pretty rough and different from how these tracks out here are usually,” he said. “Qualifying didn’t set us up very well for the heat. We fell to sixth on the start and ran there so unfortunately we didn’t transfer to the main. We had a real fast car in the B Main. We were leading and with a few laps to go the right front spindle broke, which ended our night.”
Starks qualified 17th quickest before ending sixth in a heat race. The DNF in the B Main capped the night early.
The team returned to Lincoln Speedway on Monday, when Starks timed in fifth quickest overall. He won a heat race from the pole to make the feature inversion for the third time during Speedweek.
“They drew the No. 4 for the inversion so we just missed it and started fifth,” he said. “We were up to third. (Kyle) Larson got by us and once I saw him zip by on the top I jumped up behind him. I was about a lap away from getting Lucas (Wolfe) and Alan Krimes, but as that happened Larson got them and they jumped to the top. On a restart we let (Dale) Blaney get by us so we fell to fifth with about 10 laps to go. It was a really fun race. The track was real wide and racy. For how off we’ve been at Lincoln this year, I was really happy with our result.”
Starks ended with a career-best fifth-place finish.
He and Gobrecht Motorsports took Tuesday’s Speedweek night off, but will be in action for the remainder of Pennsylvania Speedweek, which features races on Wednesday at Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, Md.; Thursday and Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa.; Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and Sunday at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa.
