Qualls Named King Of The Mods
North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL, welcomed the Tri-State Open Wheel Modified Series for the 4th Annual King of Mods "No Fender Nationals," presented by CFR. The event, headlined by the CRUSA sanctioned Modified Sportsman, offered $4,000 to win and $400 to start for the 35-lap main event on Saturday night in Northern Alabama.
The 22-car field came to life off turn four, leading to the first big scare of the night as Mike Henn of Muscle Shoals, AL, spun from his seventh starting spot right in front of the field in turn one. The entire field scattered, with some cars heading over the turn one and two banking to avoid Henn's opening lap spin. The field lined back up and went back to green, with Logan Hickerson of Linden, TN, leading the way early over Tyler Hurst and Bradly Qualls. Hickerson caught the tail end of the field, allowing Hurst to get close until Jarred Gray of Ragland, AL, spun, bringing out the yellow flag. This bunched up the leaders, and Hurst and Qualls battled for the second spot, with Qualls up top and Hurst running the bottom. Eric Hickerson of Linden, TN, joined the mix, making it a three-car race for second, including Hurst and Qualls.
The caution flag flew once again off turn two, and the field came back together. Eric Hickerson then put pressure on Logan with Bradly Qualls in tow. CRUSA National Points leader Jarrett Miller of Huntsville, AL, spun off turn four, bringing out the yellow and restacking the field with 19 cars still on the track and 27 laps complete. The restart proved treacherous as multiple cars collided in turns three and four, including Shane Stephens of Arlington, TN, Jarrad Gray of Ragland, AL, Kevin Whaley of Flintville, TN, and Rex Michael of Tuscumbia, AL, with eight laps to go. The green flag came back out, and Logan Hickerson led the field for the remaining eight laps with Eric Hickerson in tow. However, the finishing order was rearranged after post-race tech inspections. Bradly Qualls was named the event winner after the top two cars were disqualified due to rule violations. Qualls became the fourth different winner of the event since it began in 2021.
