Mark Lloyd Memorial sees great action on Turner Plumbing Night

A fabulous night of racing was held Saturday at Park Jefferson for the 3rd annual Mark Lloyd Memorial, presented by Turner Plumbing. With storms imminent, drivers raced clean and green for a majority of the night which saw many of the point battles crystalize on the 2nd to final night of IMCA track points.
The LMSS Touring Series invaded Park Jefferson, and it was repeat winner Travis Schreurs finding victory lane. Schreurs won over the hard charging 11k of Korthals and a very strong run by Brylee Gough. The LMSS had 2 races on the season at Park Jefferson and it was a celebration to have them as part of the Mark Lloyd Memorial.
In the SignMasters Modifieds Road to the Iron Cup event, Chris Abelson returned to his Sioux City base and was able to charge from the 3rd row to take the top spot. Abelson’s bright number 1 was fast all around the Siouxland oval during the draw redraw event. Bob Moore and Jason Schneider’s rounded out the top 3. RJ Merchant had a strong return to action and finished 11th.
The IMCA Sprint Cars continue to excite fans, and it was Colin Smith who virtually wrapped up a point championship. Smith, whose black and orange 05 machine has been fast all season, came from the 2nd row to win over a number of newcomers to the track. This division has continued to grow in 2017 and will be an exciting one to watch for the 2018 season as a number of drivers are looking at moving up.
Travis Barker used the middle of the drying racing surface to his advantage to put the 30 car on top for the J&J Fitting Stock Cars. Barker, who was a runner up a number of times in 2016, found the new number 30 to his liking and put it in victory lane. Jason Ward, one of the all-time stock car win leaders at the track, finished 2nd and Tom McKenzie finished third.
The biggest check of the night went to Cody Thompson, who picked up a cool $1,000 thanks to the great people from Turner Plumbing and their various wholesalers. Adam Twedt and crew raised an additional $1,000 for the purse which saw a season high 20 competitors compete in heat races and 19 make it to the feature. Thompson won over Dave Riley and Rusty Montagne, with Todd Boulware virtually wrapping up the title by virtue of this 4th place finish. Boulware did take home some cash as track photagrapher Krissy Bearce presented her exciting Austrailian Pursuit event for Sport Modifieds, and it was Boulware picking up the money.
Craig Clift similarly wrapped up the IMCA Hobby Stock title by coming from 12th to win the feature event. Paul Menard suffered the cruelest of defeats as he looped his car while leading coming out of turn 4 on the final lap. Andy Hoffman and Gavin Gilbertson took advantage of the miscue to round out the podium.
It was David Bates in the 13 coming home in the top spot for the IMCA Sport Compact presented by Fox 620. Bates was able to hold off the challenges of Brody Spreng and Danny VanderVeen to win over a strong field. Bates was fast all night long and also won the 2nd heat race.
Weekly championships will be on the line this Saturday Night as Park Jefferson Speedway presents Championship Night this Saturday night as the track will crown champions in its 6 IMCA Divisions.
