The event at Salina Highbanks Speedway will mark the fifth time the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has raced at the high-banked three-eighths-mile, dating back to 2011. Shane Stewart, who grew up in nearby Bixby, won last season in front of numerous family and friends.
Joey Saldana won at Salina in 2014, while Craig Dollansky scored the win in the inaugural World of Outlaws event at Salina Highbanks Speedway in 2011 and was victorious again in 2013.
Along with Stewart, 2013 series titlist Daryn Pittman hails from Oklahoma, Owasso, to be exact. The veteran driver finished on the podium last year at Salina Highbanks Speedway, as he, too, looks for a home state win in front of family and friends.
The 2016 season recently kicked off for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series with races in Florida and Texas. Brad Sweet was victorious on opening night for his Kasey Kahne Racing team and followed that up with another win in the finale of the three-night event. He also picked up a win in Texas. Donny Schatz, the seven-time and defending series champion, who drives for Tony Stewart Racing, won on the second night of the season. Pittman also scored a victory in Texas. On the strength of his three wins, and five top-five finishes, Sweet is the current series point leader.
Battling Sweet, Pittman and Schatz in 2016 is a talented group of full-time competitors, including: Shane Stewart, who drives for Larson Marks Racing, co-owned by NASCAR driver Kyle Larson, veterans Saldana, Paul McMahan and Jason Sides, up-and-coming young drivers David Gravel, Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen, sophomore driver Jason Johnson and rookie contender Greg Wilson from Ohio.
