After a weekend off the weekly warriors of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returned to action for Joe’s Hand Cleaner Night at the Races. A pit full of 87 racecars greeted fans on the pleasant July evening. Heat races and B-Features sped by and the first A-Feature rolled onto the speedway just as lights were being illuminated around the facility. Pure Stocks would be the first class to hit the track in the four-division card just ahead of the Super Stocks and B-Mods, while the Modifieds headlined the evening’s program.
A pair of Hulbert, Oklahoma racers, Logan Brown and Bobby Jack Potts, led the Pure Stock A-Feature to the green flag. Brown held strong in the early goings of the 15-lapper to battle Brennon Lacy for the top spot. However, Brown fell into the clutches of Lacy, losing the lead and eventually encountering mechanical issues that took the youngster out of the race. Lacy cruised on to his sixth victory of the season. The triumph also pushed the Bixby, Oklahoma hot shoe to eleven wins since the track’s re-opening surpassing Jack Kirby and his father, Kevin Lacy on the all-time win list. Nathan Campbell followed Lacy across the line after starting 15th on the grid, coming out of the B-Feature. Tyler Chambers finished third while Roger Starling advanced twelve spots to finish forth. Justin Walters finished fifth after winning the B-Feature earlier in the evening.
The Super Stocks were next up to tackle the Highbanks for a 15-lap shootout. Boone Johnson was the early leader showing the field the way around the topside of the racing surface. Johnson withstood some early cautions, but could not maintain the lead on a lap nine restart after a three car squabble that ended Dale Richardson’s night. Johnson slipped out of the preferred groove on exit of turn two on the restart allowing Darin Rigney to race by. Johnson’s #10 machine rode the backstretch wall before coming to stop, bringing out another caution. Going back to the last completed lap, Jason Wayne was scored in second so he inherited the lead while Rigney was sent back to restart in second. This turned out to set up a final-lap dash that brought fans to their feet. After Wayne took the white flag, Rigney threw a hair-raising slide job off of turn two to take the lead. That move secured Rigney his first win of the 2017 season as Wayne crossed in second. Tenth-starting Larry Rupe finished third, Danny Womack picked up his second top five in as many starts finishing forth, and Kyle Davis marched from shotgun on the field to finish fifth.
Although Jeran Frailey led all 20 laps, the B-Mod A-Feature had its fair share of excitement in the race for the lead. Frailey fought off challenges in a three wide race from Cody Jolly and Matt Collins with five laps to go to seal the deal for the third time this season. Jolly’s charge from the forth row ended with three laps to go and the current points leader recorded his second DNF of the season. Collins held on to finish in the runner-up spot, Chris Hawkins wound up third, Justin Shoemaker was forth, and Shane Collins motored up from eleventh to finish fifth.
Pole-sitter Mitch Keeter led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap Modified main event, which saw stellar competition from seventeen of the nineteen scheduled starters. Keeter paced the field around the topside of the speedway for the opening five circuits while Lobo Racing teammates Tyler Wolff and RC Whitwell exchanged slide jobs in the race for second. Once Wolff cleared himself from Whitwell, the Fayetteville, Arkansas racer was able to blast by Keeter with just 6 laps completed. From there Wolff led for the remaining distance picking up his second win of the season. Whitwell finished in second, Keeter slipped one more spot to finish third while veterans Johnny Bone, Jr. and Al Purkey rounded out the top five.
Up next at Salina Highbanks Speedway: Saturday, August 5th featuring a full program of NWAAS points racing presented by S&J Plumbing plus Powder Puff Races. Grandstand gates open at 5 racing starts at 7. Adults and Seniors $10, Kids (6-12) $5, and Kids (5 and under Free).
