Wolff rides high side to Sooner Showdown victory

by Keith Pirtle
With 32 USRA Modifieds rolling into the famed Salina Highbanks Speedway for the first trip by the Touring Outlaw Modified Series to the famed dirt oval, the speeds were unmatched by any tracks that the TOMS has ventured to and Tyler Wolff led the way.

With TOMS rookie Bo Day and Wolff bringing the field of 23 to the green flag in the 25-lap main event, Wolff showed tremendous speed and clearly set the pace early on the high side.

Famed local racer and four-time USMTS national champ Jason Hughes started in the sixth position and showed his skills, making quick work of the racers between himself and Wolff.

After an early caution, Wolff led the field to the green jumping up on the high side while Hughes worked low side through the middle and drew up to the back bumper of Wolff at the flagstand on lap 3. Wolff bobbled in turn 4 which allowed Hughes to slip by.

Hughes continued to lead until lap 19 where lapped traffic started becoming involved in the battle for first and second.

At the stripe to complete lap 21, Hughes was starting to push the subject and got into the left rear of Danny Veal causing a right front flat, which brought out a caution for the incident and stacked up the field for the restart.

TOMS points leader Triston Dycus, who had worked his way up to the fourth position from his 12th starting spot, was followed closely by Troy Taylor. Wolff led the field to the green followed closely by Mitch Keeter, Randy Timms, Dycus and Taylor.

With the final three laps, Wolff led the way to the checkered flag while Dycus slipped by Timms at the line to steal third. Keeter was second and Taylor finished fifth.

As the 2018 racing season is starting to wrap up which leads up to the 3rd Annual TOMS Invitational, there are only a couple of races left to qualify to get the mandatory two races in for the event. This coming Saturday, Sept. 22, is the Bryan Mize Memorial at the Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas, and the final points race of the 2018 season happends Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Superbowl Speedway in Greenville, Texas. The TOMS Invitational will be Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20, at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.
