This weekend at Sunset Speedway was by far the place to be for dirt racing action on this Memorial weekend. With two full days of racing, the excitement truly started Friday afternoon when cars and crew started filling up the pits, with motorhomes and trailers everywhere! Even all the Sunset Speedway crew was on hand getting ready!
Both Saturday and Sunday nights racing provided 7 incredibly fast classes for the fastest ¼ mile bullring. We had 110 cars show up to battle it out each night. On the card were “NW Extreme late Models/Super Late Models, Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Bridgeport Logistics Street Stocks, Micro Sprints 1200, 600 open and 600 restricted.
DAY #1 RECAP: May 28-2016
Fast Qualifying in all classes would go as such; Bridgeport Logistics Street stock- #04 of Joey Tardio, Budweiser IMCA Modifieds “hot laps” #25 Craig Cassell, Micro 1200’s #92 Seth Hespe, 600-open 14w Keith Wickard, 600-Res #19 Colby Thornhill, NW Extreme / Super LM #111 Joey Tanner.
Micro Sprints would see over 50 cars making for ‘B’ Main events. 1200 “A” Main would go to the very fast Brock Lemley. 600 Open “A” main would have a shootout between two very fast drivers #21 of Jesse Schlotfeldt and #78 Joe Constance. Constance ran the bottom most of the night with Schlotfeldt trying to find any forward bite top and bottom but would end up 2nd behind a strong Constance.
600 Res “A” main would see some crazy racing. Opening green flag both the #22D of Dakota Drake and 11c of Colin Mackey would tangle coming out of turn 2 resulting in Mackey leaving the track and Drake with some heavy front wing damage. #19 of Colby Thornhill who started 8th would grab the top groove at the restart and into 1&2 would pass 5 cars putting him into 3rd. He would take the lead on lap 5 over Drake and start to pull away from the field. With 12 laps to go Thornhill lost a water hose sending out a caution giving the lead back to Drake. With 5 laps to go late race caution comes out for the two cars of Jimmy Schram #22s and Superman Collen Winebarger #S getting together going into turn 1 with both ending up next to the wall on the exit of turn 2.
