Tony Jackson Scores Super Sportsman Victory at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Tony Jackson remembers his last Super Sportsman race of the 2020 season at BAPS Motor Speedway.

It’s kind of hard to forget. Jackson had a hefty eight-second lead over the field and was on his way to an easy victory when a part failed, and he hit the fence in Turn 1.

On Saturday, Jackson got a measure of redemption on Sipe’s Lawn Care and Landscaping “Features Only” Night at the speedway. The Carlisle driver made up a lot of ground over the last 12 laps and executed a last-lap pass on Chase Gutshall to take the win in the 25-Lap event.

“I’m speechless,” Jackson said. “I never thought with 12 to go that we were going to win, but that’s why you never quit.

“The only thing that could make this better is if we come back next week and go back-to-back, but wins are hard to come by. The last race down here last year was a heartbreaker. We had that race won.

“I think we had an eight-second lead with four to go. I drove into one, had a part failure, and I hit the fence. I said, ‘Man, we just need some better luck this year, and I think we can contend and win races and run for the points. So, we will chip away each week.”

In 602 Modified action, Steve Davis was victorious. Troy Miller topped the 358 Late Model field, with Andrew Hogue taking top honors in the Extreme Stock main and Seth Kearchner winning the Central Pa. Legends main.

As for Jackson, he didn’t gain any points on his competitors with show-up points in place, but he might have stumbled on something that can help him later in the year.

Chase Gutshall started on the pole and took the early lead. He controlled the event through the first and only caution, which occurred on Lap 13, when Luke Deatrick suffered a flat tire.

Jackson, who started fifth on the grid, was running fourth at the time. He jumped to the top on the restart to take third from Chris Meleason and set sail after the leaders.

“When I watch Kyle Larson race, I think I race harder,” Jackson said. “I watched him last night rip the top, and I watched that.

“I watched them go out and water [the track] before the feature, and I thought, ‘Man, I like that they are doing that.’ Then we came out, and it was really wet up there, and I was afraid for a while.”

Continued Jackson, “We were running fourth, got a good restart, and got by Chris. With 12 to go, I told myself, ‘I’m running into one as hard as I can run. If it sticks, it sticks. If it doesn’t, we’re going to be in the fence.”

Jackson made it work. He used the outside to pick off Matt Ondek on Lap 17 and started to track down the leader.

Gutshall was setting a good pace, but Jackson was a little better. He got his shot coming to the white and made it happen over the final circuit, getting to the outside in the first and second corner.

“I will be honest, with two to go, I thought my only shot was on the top,” Jackson said. “That lapped car was a pick, and I knew Chase was running the bottom.

“When I got him coming down the frontstretch into one, I used the lapped car again going into three. I kind of rode in above him, drove down, and thought, ‘Unless he rips the top here, we should be good.’”

Jackson was good and took his first win of the season by 1.070 seconds. He also received a last-lap pass award of $250 from W.C. Eshenaur and Son.

Gutshall settled for second, with Kenny Edkin, Ondek, and Meleason completing the top five. Mike Enders was the Mac Tools Hard Charger, advancing 10 spots.

In the FXG Sign & Label/Dickey’s Barbecue Pit 602 Modified feature, Davis started 10th and carved his way to the front, taking the lead from Michael White on the 11th circuit. But White didn’t go away, returning the favor on the 14th circuit.

Davis continued to pressure for the lead. He made the last pass in the entertaining battle on Lap 17 and led the final 13 circuits for the win. Michael White, Adam White, Skylar Sheriff, and Kody Sites completed the top five. Randy Stoudt won the Skylar Sheriff Motorsports Hard Charger Award.

The Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model event featured 10 cautions and two leaders, with Troy Miller topping Ben Whitaker at the finish.

Whitaker started on the pole and led the first five circuits. Miller, who started seventh, took the top spot away on Lap 6 and led the rest of the way in the 20-lap event, beating Whitaker, and Wayne Pfeil to the stripe.

In Super Homes Extreme Stock action, Andrew Hogue passed Donnie Broderick on Lap 9 and sped away to the win. Bill Powell advanced from 14th to second, with Johnny Palm completing the podium.

Kearchner started third in the Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends main presented by Baker Door Company and stalked early leader Travis Perry.

Perry was setting a pretty good pace, but Kearchner slipped by for the lead on the 15th circuit. He led the rest of the way and took the checker over Perry, Chris Transeau, Stephen Wurtzer, and Bill Diehl.
