Pokorski Motorsports battles back from tough luck in MSA twinbill

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 25, 2019 – Despite encountering misfortune in back-to-back Midwest Sprint Car Association A-main competition, during a doubleheader weekend of 360 Sprint Car racing action at SK Speedway in Unity, Wis. and The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis., Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports displayed commendable perseverance in salvaging two respectable showings.

The MSA twinbill of action began with the team’s third trip to SK Speedway in Unity, Wis. where 27 MSA Sprint Cars signed in for an evening of action on the third-mile banked dirt oval.

Pokorski drew the seventh starting spot in the second MSA heat race. After falling back to eighth on lap 1, Pokorski slipped past rookie Brandon Berth to take seventh on lap 2. One lap later, the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion worked his way past Josh Teunissen to seize sixth in turn one and Jack Vanderboom in turn four to move into fifth.

Pokorski crossed the finish line in fifth, but moved up to fourth when Scotty Thiel, who took the checkered flag in third, was penalized two spots for jumping the initial start.

After the tabulation of heat race passing points and the invert draw, Pokorski lined up fifth in the 25-lap A main. After jockeying for position on the smooth and slick track surface in the opening laps, Pokorski found himself dueling for seventh place with Kurt Davis on lap 8.

Following a spirited duel between the two former MSA champions, Davis eventually claimed the seventh spot for good on lap 13 moving Pokorski back to eighth. Pokorski held strong in the eighth spot through a string of caution flags until the fifth caution flag of the race appeared on lap 17. On the restart, a chain reaction incident at the front of the field forced Pokorski to make contact with several other cars, which resulted in a flat right front tire.

After going to the work area to replace the tire, Pokorski had to restart the race in the 19th position. Pokorski worked his way back up through the field in the closing eight laps to salvage a 13th-place finish in a race won by Scotty Thiel.

“Friday at SK was a great event,” Pokorski said. “The fans seemed very excited for the show. The track conditions were also the best we have had there. The heat race went well, and the main was good until the restart with about five to go. I'm not sure who got crossed up in the front or why, but we started stacking up really quickly. Someone got into the left side nerf bar and somehow we broke a radius rod on the right front that put us in the work area.”

On Saturday, June 22, Pokorski returned to The Plymouth Dirt Track where 31 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars were on hand for the evening. Pokorski started third in the second PDTR Sprint Car head trace and placed second to earn the ninth starting spot in the 25-lap A main.

Early in the main event, Pokorski spun in turn one to bring out a yellow flag. After restarting at the rear of the field, he moved up steadily over the remaining laps to earn a 13th-place showing for the second time in as many nights in a race won by Kurt Davis.

“Saturday the night started out good,” Pokorski said. “In the feature, we were doing okay, running about eighth and I missed the cushion on entry. I got into the slick and spun all by myself. It was a straight-up driver error. Looking at the rest of the guys bearing down on you sucks. Luckily, everyone was on the ball and missed me. We had tried some new stuff and learned some things, but won't be doing exactly the same thing this Friday.”

On Friday, June 28, the Pokorski Motorsports team returns to The Plymouth Dirt Track for a special Friday night program, featuring the Russ Scheffler Tribute Race for the Late Model division. PDTR 360 Sprints, Grand Nationals and B Mods will also be on the card. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with racing slated to begin at 7 p.m.
