Thunder in the Valley - Day 1

The POWRi National and POWRi West midget racing series joined forces in a 2-day mid-season showdown at the ¼ mile track of Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, MO. 34 drivers hailing from OK, IL, KY, AZ, CA, TX, KS, MO, and MN competed for the top prize each night, with an added bonus of a $1,000 dash for the top 5 drivers from each series. This dash will be held at the season finale at Kennedale Speedway Park in November.

Making the 4 hour drive north, just outside Kansas City, Fischer Racing entered the Flying Tee Golf sponsored #24 into the Thunder in the Valley event, tied for 5th in points with the POWRi West series and eligible for the dash. Hunter Fischer drew into the outside pole position in Heat 3 and had his work cut out for him with the teams and talent brought in by the National series. Trying to make the top groove work, Hunter fell back to 5th before getting the car dialed in to make it back up to 4th. In the final lap, a slick exit from turn 4 looped the #24 around, but without incident and finished 7th. This would place the team mid-pack in the B feature.

The POWRi crew had the show moving quickly for the night and left little time to rehydrate and make adjustments to the car for the next race. The team added some fuel, adjusted air pressures, and made a few adjustments to get more traction on the slick track. Starting 11th of an 18 car field, Hunter had 12 laps to make it into the top 6 for a transfer in the A feature. The track proved to be a bigger challenge than expected and consumed many cars, with many cautions. Luckily, our driver was able to avoid the various spinouts and flips, but was unable to make up much ground on the single groove track. Finishing 1 spot better than where he started, 10th place would show in the books for night 1 and rolled into the trailer with a few worn tires, ready for the next day’s competition.

Prior to the A feature start, the top 5 drivers from each POWRi National and West divisions were called to the front grandstands for a random draw to determine their starting positions in the dash for cash at the end of the season. Hunter Fischer, in 5th place for the West, enlisted the help from a young fan to draw for him. Lady luck prevailed and a #3 was shown to the crowd as Hunter’s starting position at the end of the season. That is plenty of time for the team to get the car tuned up and ready for a good show.

As a family owned race team, Fischer Racing gives thanks to those that help keep the dream alive for our son Hunter. Flying Tee Golf on the Riverwalk in Jenks and B&C Custom Woodworks plays a big part in that! Please support those who support the team and the racing community. Rick at Bolted Spine Design makes the vinyl on our car look awesome on the track and Scott with FabTech will treat you right spraying color on your car or repairing fiberglass. Thank you everyone!
