Seven Winners Celebrate on Saturday Night at Winston

Rothbury, Michigan (Saturday, August 9th, 2014): The fans were welcomed in to the Winston Speedway in Montague, Michigan for another jam packed show on a beautiful Saturday night. There was a full show on hand featuring the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks who squared off in a heated $500 to win special presented by Herbalife Products. They were joined by the UMP DIRTcar Late Models, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, Factory Stocks/Bombers, Four-Cylinder Warriors, Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks, and Young Guns.

The Factory Stocks / Bombers squared off in a 15 lap feature event led by a front row of Nate Trick and Billy Frey. Frey would jump out first with the early lead until lap 3 where Trick made the pass for the top spot. However on lap 5 2012 track champion Josh Sternberg would work his way to the front of the field and become the leader and go on to pick up the win.

Sternberg a Muskegon, Michigan native picked up the win in the Stern’s Towing / Chevrolet for his fourth win of the season. Finishing second was Dan Wilson Jr. Mike DeJonge, Two time and defending track champion Robbie Sternberg and Josh Grabe rounded out the top five. DeJonge and Bisson were the heat race winners.

The Young Guns were out next for their 10-lap A-Main. Lydia Huisken and Kristina Johnson led the field down to the green flag. Huisken would take off with the lead in the early going. She would actually be able to hold her line for the entire length of the race, and despite several re-starts, and would get the win.

Huisken a native of Marne, Michigan picked up her first win at Winston Speedway. She finished just ahead of Morgan Smith who was second. Johnson, Gabe Flores, and Bailie Wynbelt finished off the top five. Johnson was the winner of the heat race.

Derek Poland and Jim Beltz led out the 25-lap feature for the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks. Once the green flag dropped it was Poland taking the lead early on putting distance between himself and the rest of the field. However on lap 10 Poland’s car would break and he would be forced to leave the race which gave the lead to Chuck Smith who was able to lead the rest of the event to get the win.

This was the third feature win of the year for the 29-year old Muskegon, Michigan driver of the Mulberry Manor Childcare / Chevrolet. Kendall Marlink finished second. Jeremy Holman, Jim Beltz and defending track champion Sadie Klein completed the top five. The defending UMP DIRTcar Stock Cars National Champion Josh Frye and Smith won the heat races.

The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds held their 20-lap main event. Dave Schmidt and Steve McClees were on the front row. The race began with Steve McClees jumping out front with the early advantage. He would attempt to pull away the most he could, but there was no stopping Aaron Morey who rallied from a fifth place starting spot all the way to battle with McClees and overtake the lead and go on to get the win.

This was the first win of the year for the 34-year old from West Olive, Michigan behind the wheel of the Keyser Manufacturing #2k. McClees was forced to settle for second. Schmidt, Kevin Cavanaugh, and Paul Johnson made up the top five. Morey was also the winner of the lone heat race.

The UMP DIRTcar Late Models were next two time track champion Tom Sprague Jr. and Chops Barnhard led the field onto the track for the 25-lap A-Main. Sprague took the lead in the early going, but was soon caught by the six time & defending track champion Rich Neiser who would become the new leader on lap 4. Neiser would go on from there never looking back all the way to the checkered flag.

The 44-year old Fruitport, Michigan driver earned his eighth win of the year in the Baker Engineering / Mastersbilt Racecar. Sprague took second. The defending UMP DIRTcar Late Models Michigan State Champion Eric Spangler, and Rob Taylor capped off the top five. Neiser and Spangler won the heats.

Chris Gagnon and Mike Goodwin led out the Four-Cylinder Warriors for their 12-lap feature. Gagnon was the leader after the opening lap. He would be able to lead the entire event from green to checkered after starting from the pole.

This was the second win of the season for the driver out of Muskegon, Michigan. Mike Goodwin finished just behind in second. Buck Spencer, Brian Hammond, and Melissa Sprague rounded out the top five. Gagnon also won the heat.

Finally, the Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks went head to head in a 12-lap feature with Brian Carson and Paul Namey on the front row. Once the green flag dropped it was Namey at the front of the field. On lap 4 Namey would leave the track due to mechanical issues which opened the door for Chad Tomczak to take the lead. However the battle was not over because Carson would battle back and on lap 7 he would make the pass for the lead and go on to win from there.

Carson the native of North Muskegon, Michigan driving the Reliable Towing #1040 picked up his eighth win of the year. Tomczak would have to settle for second. Christian Wynbelt, Bob Halberstadt, and John McCaul Jr. were the top five. Carson also won the heat race.

This Saturday August 16th the Winston Speedway will be running another full 7 in 1 show. The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds will be going head to head for a special $750 to win special presented by Port City Racecars. The UMP DIRTcar Late Models, UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, Factory Stocks/Bombers, Four-Cylinder Warriors, Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks, and Young Guns will all be on hand as well. The Pit Gates Open at 3:30p.m., Grandstands Open at 4:30p.m., Practice Starts at 5:30p.m., and Racing Begins at 7:00p.m.
