Traugott breaks through, Isaacs, Moler, Miller pick up wins

At the beginning of June in 2020, race season had just gotten underway at 81 Speedway. This season, April and May were filled with the roar of race engines, the sharp scent of high-octane fuel, and the glorious cheers from dedicated fans. The race calendar has once again flipped to June, and the action only got more intense on Saturday night.

Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified driver Cole Traugott has been the model of up-front consistency the first five races this season. With three podium finishes and a top-10 to his credit, Traugott looked to add a win to his 2021 81 Speedway stat sheet.

Josh Lanterman and Chris Kratzer led the 26-car field to green as Lanterman grabbed the early lead at the exit of turn two. Third-starting Traugott immediately challenged Kratzer for the runner up position, taking the spot away by the end of lap one. Executing another pass two circuits later, Traugott found himself at the point just three laps in.

Determined to put early season struggles of his own to rest, Lanterman kept pace with the No. 9 machine while battles for position raged on through the rest of the field. Just behind Lanterman, teammate Dan Powers charged from 11th to 3rd having wrestled that spot away from Kratzer just before a caution flew at the mid-way point.

When the race resumed, Traugott and Lanterman streaked away once again. Powers had his hands full with Kratzer and Tad Davis, the pair shuffling the No. 4 machine back to fifth by the exit of turn two. Powers finally stopped the slide in seventh after Kyler Kemp and Ryan McAninch had also worked their way by.

Torrid battles played out the rest of they way and at the checkers Traugott proved to be too much for Lanterman’s No. 4a machine. Kratzer bested Davis for third, while Kemp won the battle for fifth over Powers and McAninch. McAninch, Davis and Kratzer would all claim heat race wins earlier in the evening.

Ethan Issacs made the trip to from Bonner Springs, KS to compete in the Chunky Poodle USRA B Mod division. The driver of the No. 66 machine brought Jeremy Chambers’ perfect 3-for-3 record in local series action to a halt. Issacs took the lead in the opening set of corners over his front row starting mate Kenton Allen, and never looked back leading every circuit around the top side of the Park City, KS oval. Kenton Allen kept Issacs within striking distance the entire way but had to settle for second when the checkers fell. Chamber drove from 11th to 3rd, while Gabriel Hodges and Jake Richards completed the top 5. Heat race wins went to Hodges, Allen and Issacs.

Switching roles after last week’s late race tussle, Dillon Moler bested Chevy Coleman in Two-M Motorsports and Machine Rookie Modified action. Moler made quick work of the front three from his 4th place starting spot, while Coleman drove from 12th on the grid to challenge Moler for the lead late, crossing the line just behind the No. 78d. Brett Davis, Zach Prather, and Logan Johnson completed the top 5. Walt Brookshire won the B-feature while Prather, Ethan Hafner, and Billy Hardin picked up heat race wins.

Picking up his second win on the year, Scott Miller drove his No. 1 HeyGlassman.com Stock car to victory lane. Chris Holle led most of the event before Miller was able to methodically work his way by the No. 24 using the bottom side of the Speedway. Holle then fought with Beau Davis in the 01x during the races waning laps, Davis eventually getting the better of that battle as well. Holle was forced to settle for 3rd while point leader Clint Smith and Austin Ramey completed the top 5. Ramey and Scott Lehman would claim the two heat race wins.
