Goeden makes grand return to PDTR victory lane

Weiss, Lorier, Strane Jr. tally A-main triumphs

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 2, 2025 – As one of the most successful drivers in the history of The Plymouth Dirt Track, Kewaskum’s Donny Goeden has written the book on winning races at the third-mile clay oval throughout his standout 40-year Wall of Fame career.

Goeden, who ended a six-year retirement from racing at Plymouth in 2022, added a new winning chapter by earning his first 25-lap Akright Auto Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car A-main victory in nearly nine years on Saturday, Aug. 2.

Brad Weiss of Cascade claimed his first 25-lap Oostburg Automotive Grand National A-main win of the 2025 campaign.

Sheboygan’s Steve Lorier raced to victory in the 25-lap Sheboygan Flooring B Mod main event.

Brian Strane Jr. of Paris emerged victorious in the 20-lap IRA Lightning Sprints A main presented by guest division sponsor Sheboygan’s Rock Station 106.5 The Buzz.

Contact between polesitter T.J. Smith of Greenville and outside front row starter Billy Kreutz of Kiel on the initial start of the 360 Sprint Car A main led to a multi-car incident on the back stretch, which collected Justin Erickson of Plymouth, Burnett’s Joseph Hintz, Hayden Johnson of Campbellsport and Kewaskum’s Bill Taylor.

Following a lengthy red flag period, Kreutz, who maintained control of his car during the melee, retained his starting spot at the front of the field. Erickson, Johnson and Taylor restarted the race at the tail of the field, while Smith and Hintz were forced to retire from the event.

When the green flag flew, Kreutz bolted into the lead from the pole with original third starter Goeden, who restarted second, following close behind.

On lap 2, Goeden powered into the lead along the high groove in turn two and quickly pulled out to a half-straightaway advantage over Kreutz. Two-time PDTR 360 Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee brought out a caution flag after contacting the back stretch wall on lap 8.

Following the restart, original fifth starter Kevin Karnitz of West Bend used a high move to launch past Kreutz and gain the runner-up spot. Three laps later, two-time and defending PDTR 360 Sprint Car champ Ben Schmidt of Plymouth advanced up from his original 11th starting position to secure third.

As the laps wound down, Goeden found himself mired in dense lapped traffic, which allowed Karnitz to pull within striking distance with five laps to go. On lap 23, Karnitz ducked low in turn four in a bid to wrestle away the lead from Goeden.

However, the two-time Plymouth Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Winged Super Modified champion turned back Karnitz’s advances on the way to his first PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main victory since Sept. 2, 2016, 22nd career PDTR 360 Sprint Car triumph and 23rd overall Midwest Sprint Car Association main event win. It was also Goeden’s 41st career A-main victory at Plymouth in 360 Sprint Car and Winged Super Modified competition.

With the win, Goeden became the 10th different driver to claim an A-main victory in 2025 PDTR 360 Sprint Car action.

Karnitz had to settle for second, Schmidt wound up third, Chris Clayton of Waldo placed fourth after originally starting ninth and Kreutz rounded out the top five.

Outside front row starter Brad Weiss jumped into the lead at the start of the Grand National A main before a caution flag flew for a two-car incident in turn two.

When the race resumed, fifth starter Will Schumacher of Hartford bolted into second with three-time PDTR Grand National champ Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis advancing to third from the seventh starting spot.

On lap 5, Sorce Jr. assumed second as Weiss built up a half-straightaway cushion. Lapped traffic proved to be a challenge for Weiss starting on lap 14 as Sorce Jr. quickly cut into the lead gap.

Sorce Jr. drew side-by-side with Weiss, who got caught behind a lapped car on lap 17. The two drivers dueled in close quarters on lap 18 before Weiss executed what proved to be the winning move by boldly splitting two slower cars entering turn three on lap 19 to establish an insurmountable gap over Sorce Jr.

Weiss pulled away to earn his second career PDTR Grand National A-main win.

Sorce Jr. placed second, Will Schumacher was third, ninth starter Derek Kaat of Plymouth placed fourth and 2019 PDTR Grand National champion Tyler Kulow of Plymouth wound up fifth after starting sixth.

Scott Quarnstrom of Lake Villa, Ill. led the opening lap of the B Mod main event from the pole with fifth starter Tim Thrun of Horicon in tow. On lap 6, Steve Lorier, who started sixth, moved past Quarnstrom to seize the top spot.

Lorier led third starter Vince Jung of Iron Ridge and ninth starter Cole Thomas of Germantown past the halfway point before four consecutive caution flags for spins bunched the field down the stretch.

The cautions didn’t faze Lorier as he held on to earn his sixth career PDTR B Mod A-main triumph.

Jung placed second, Thomas was third, seventh starter Brandon Knepprath of Kewaskum placed fourth and Rory Welch of Plymouth moved up from the 11th starting position to round out the top five.

After polesitter Ron Brannam of Barrington, Ill. grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the IRA Lightning Sprints main event, the race was stopped twice when flips involving Tim Brannam and Max Brannam of Holiday Hills, Ill. brought out two successive red flags.

When the race resumed, Chad Stouthamer of Big Bend swept into the lead from the fourth starting spot with Brian Strane Jr., who started 11th, trailing close behind.

On lap 8, Strane Jr. made what proved to be the winning move in turn two on the way to his fifth IRA Lightning Sprint A-main victory of the 2025 campaign.

Stouthamer was second, third starter Mike Neau of Pleasant Prairie placed third, Tucker Richards of Bristol claimed fourth after starting eighth and sixth starter Nick Petska of Spring Grove, Ill. finished fifth.

Donny Goeden secured 360 Sprint Car fast qualifier honors with a lap of 12.490 seconds.

Nick Petska turned in a lap of 13.504 to earn the fast qualifier award in the IRA Lightning Sprints division.

The event attracted a total of 73 cars, including 23 360 Sprint Cars, 22 Grand Nationals, 16 B Mods and 12 Lightning Sprints.

The evening, which featured a Kids Coin and Candy Drop courtesy of VanDerVaart Concrete Products, Kids Coloring Contest and Kids Glow Stick Giveaway sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, was sponsored by Pit Stop Pizza.

PDTR action resumes on Saturday, Aug. 9, featuring the final race of the 2025 Seubert Calf Ranches Super Six Late Model Series season presented by guest division sponsor Sheboygan’s Rock Station 106.5 The Buzz.

Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha heads into the program with a six-point lead over six-time PDTR Late Model champion Brad Mueller of Random Lake in the chase for the 2025 track title.

The program also marks the final Dirt Devil Grand National Series event of the 2025 Plymouth Dirt Track season, presented by PDTR division sponsor Oostburg Automotive.

The PDTR Akright Auto 360 Sprint Car and Sheboygan Flooring B Mods will also be in action.

Spectator gates open at 4:30 p.m. with qualifying slated for 5:30 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m.
