28th Jook George Memorial To Pegher At PPMS

Mike Pegher, Jr. of Cranberry Township became the first driver to win the Jook George Steel City Classic four times on Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night.  Pegher earned $4010 for his 40 lap victory in the 28th Annual event for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, as a part of the Sweeney Chevrolet RUSH Dirt Late Model Series Tour.

Other winners included Todd Weldon from Monongahela, who notched his third victory of the season in the Sunoco Sportsman.  Levi Spinneweber of Butler earned his fourth victory of the season in the Super6 Late Models.  In the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, it was Stephen Shelpman of Pleasant Hills in victory lane for the second time this season.  Kayla McManus of Elizabeth earned her second win of the season in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns.  The CruiseAmerica Open Four feature event went to division point leader Matthew Rubright for the second time this season.

A field of 43 entries were on hand for the 28th Annual Jook George Steel City Classic, with Mike Pegher, Jr. the fastest qualifier with a lap of 19.797 seconds.  The field was divided into four qualifying heats, taking the top five finishers to the main.  Heat race winners were Pegher, Russ King, Jacob Hawkins, and John Mollick.  Two B-Mains rounded out the qualifying process, which were won by Eric Wilson and Matt Latta.  The top two finishers from each heat ran the dash to determine feature starting positions, with King winning to earn the pole for the 40 lap main event.

With King and Pegher leading the field to green, pace setter King took off too early, jumping the original start.  He was penalized back to the second row for the next try for a start, moving third starting Jacob Hawkins to the pole position.  Hawkins took the lead at the start, holding off a brief challenge from Pegher before pulling away in the lead, with RUSH Series point leader Bryce Davis, King, and John Waters taking up the chase.  By lap 8, the leaders had caught the tail of the field.  King passed Davis for third on lap 11, and by lap 13 was right behind Pegher in second as green flag racing continued.  On lap 16, King moved ahead of Pegher at the line, but Pegher passed him back as lap 17 was scored.

Working lap 17, Jamie Wrightsman spun in turn two to bring out the first caution of the event.  Race leader Hawkins was collected, as King also suffered damage in the incident.  The running order for the restart would be Pegher leading Davis, Waters, John Mollick, and Daryl Charlier.  One more lap would be completed before the next yellow waved, for a three car tangle in turn one.

Back to green, Pegher had his hands full with Davis, with Waters, eleventh starting Colton Flinner, and Charlier taking up the chase.  As the green flag run continued, Pegher was able to pull away in the lead.  The next caution period came with 26 laps in, for Eric Wilson against the wall in turn four.  The restart saw Pegher and Davis again battling for the lead, with 13th starting Justin Lamb advancing from sixth to third.  Just one more lap was run before the final caution waved for Flinner slowing with issues.

The final restart with 13 laps remaining saw Davis pass Pegher for the top spot on lap 28.  Just as it did on the previous green flag run, Pegher’s car got better as the laps went along, as he regained the lead a lap later, and he would lead the remaining distance to earn the victory.  Davis was second, 2.379 seconds behind at the checkered flag.  Lamb was third, breaking the tie in track points between him and Charlier.  Waters was fourth, with fifth going to Jeremy Wonderling from 17th starting spot.  Ben Policz was sixth from 14th, with Mollick, 19th starting Dan Angelicchio, defending race champion Mike Reft, and Charlier from the tail after pitting on the last caution period completing the top ten.  Chuck Medved won the 10 lap Non Qualifier’s Race over Zachary Kane, Chuck Recker, Tony White, and Bob Schwartzmiller.

Ryan Moyer and Davey Lee led the 15 lap Sunoco Sportsman feature to green with Lee leading lap 1, before a multi-car tangle in turn one slowed the pace.  Before another lap could be run, point leader Dave McManus spun in turn two, and this would be the final restart of the race.  Fifth starting Danny Rich took the lead when racing resumed, and at lap 2 they were three wide for second behind him.  Bob Schwartzmiller won the battle for second, as eighth starting Todd Weldon moved to third.  The battle was for second as Weldon passed Schwartzmiller on lap 6, and started closing on Rich.  With an inside pass off of turn four, Weldon would be the new leader on lap 10.  With no issues over the remaining laps, Weldon took the win over Rich by 2.623 seconds.  Schwartzmiller was a car length behind Rich in finishing third.  McManus recovered from his spin to finish fourth, with A.J. Poljak fifth.  McManus and Schwartzmiller took heat race wins.

With Frank McFeaters and Levi Spinneweber leading the Super6 Late Model feature to green, the first lap saw Ed Dunkle spinning in turn two.  As he fought to gain control of the spinning car, it dug in on the left rear wheel and tipped over onto its roof.  Dunkle was uninjured but the car was done for the event.  Heat winner Spinneweber went on to lead the entire 8 lap distance over McFeaters and Justin Koebler.

The 12 lap Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stock main had Casey Grumling and Adam Ferree leading the field to green, but third starting Stephen Shelpman moved by both to lead lap 1.  A three wide battle for third on lap 3 settled down into Justin Shipley passing Ferree, and then sixth starting Dave Sheriff advancing to second on lap 5.  Sheriff inched in on Shelpman in the closing laps, but it was Shelpman by three car lengths over Sheriff at the flag, followed by Shipley, Ferree, and Grumling.  Shelpman also was the heat race winner.

Kayla McManus lost the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns feature to Ben Anton last week with a slip in turn four coming to the white flag.  She would not make the same mistake this week, as she soundly defeated Anton in this week’s 6 lap event, winning by 20 car lengths.  Kyle Janas was third.

It was all Matthew Rubright in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours.  Starting fourth, Rubright advanced to the lead on lap 1 and held it throughout the 8 lap event.  Seventh starting Andy Garlinger passed John Gill coming to the white flag in getting second.  Behind Gill in third was C.J. Parrill and Tom Anton.  The heat winner was Garlinger.
