norris wins the 2022 herb scott memorial
Imperial, PA
After a week off, PPMS was back in action on Saturday night with the first RUSH Touring Race of the season for the Herb Scott Memorial. Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile would see qualifying, six heat races, a six-lap dash, and six feature events. Michael Norris (N1), from Sarver, would win the 2022 Herb Scott Memorial for the Hovis Auto and Truck Supply RUSH Touring Series. Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, would pick up his first win of the season for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Gary Koteles (65K), from Stockdale, would get the win for the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks. Susie Rudolph (55), from Steubenville, Ohio, would get her second win of the season in the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder feature, and Cameron Hollister (44), from McDonald, would get his first win of the season for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.
26 Rohrich RUSH Late Models were on hand for the first RUSH Touring Series race of the season as they would battle it out for the Herb Scott Memorial. 20.22 was the FK Rod Ends Qualifying Fast Time set by Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown. After qualifying, the field was broken into three heat races with the top two from each heat entering the redraw for the six-lap dash. Lukon (184) won the first heat with Tim Shaffer (45) taking the second spot. Heat two had Joe Martin (10S) as the winner with Daryl Charlier (3RK) finishing second. Michael Norris (N1) was the final heat race winner and Logan Robertson (17R) would get the second spot. Lukon (184) and Norris (N1) would start one and two in the dash respectively. Norris (N1) would win the dash which put him on the pole for the 30-lap feature event. The top five starters behind Norris (N1) were Lukon (184) in second, Chariler (3RK) in third, Robertson (17R) in fourth, Martin (10S) in fifth, and Shaffer (45) in sixth. When the green flag dropped in the 30-lap feature, the pole-sitter Norris (N1) would fall to third, Robertson (17R) would take second, and Lukon (184) would pull away with the early lead. Norris (N1) would take over second on lap two and begin to try to catch the leader, Lukon (184). Charlier (3RK) would move into the third spot on lap five knocking Robertson (17R) to fourth, while Lukon (184) and Norris (N1) were still running one and two. Lapped traffic would come into play for the front-runners on lap seven but the event’s first caution would come on the same lap. With the field reset, Lukon (184) would take the inside on the restart putting Norris (N1) to his outside. When green replaced yellow, the field roared into turn one as Norris (N1) stayed to the outside and Lukon (184) on the inside. Norris (N1) would get a good run coming off of the high side of turn two, down the backstretch, and as they came through turns three and four, Norris (N1) would take the lead from Lukon (184). Norris (N1), Lukon (184), and Charlier (3RK) were running one, two, and three on lap 10, and Charlier (3RK) would take over the second spot on lap 13. Norris (N1) and Charlier (3RK) would enter lapped traffic on lap 14 and put on quite the show for the next several laps. On lap 20, Charlier (3RK) would attempt to pass Norris (N1) for the lead on the high side as Norris (N1) stayed low, and the duo would split the lapped car of Ashton Briggs (11A). Despite a great effort by Charlier (3RK), Norris (N1) was able to keep his lead. The final caution would come on lap 27 as Norris (N1) made contact with the lapped car of Brady Wonderling (Z1). B. Wonderling (Z1) spun out and Norris (N1) was able to keep going and keep his lead. Norris (N1) chose the inside on the restart with Charlier (3RK) to his outside. When the green flag waved for the final time, Norris (N1) kept his lead over the field. Charlier (3RK) tried to pass Norris (N1) for the lead in the final three laps but it wasn’t enough. Norris (N1) would lead the final three laps to win the 2022 Herb Scott Memorial. He was followed to the line by Charlier (3RK) in second, Reft (9R) in third, Robertson (17R) in fourth, and Lukon (184) in fifth.
In the Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature, Nick Kocuba (10) would start on the pole. Daryl Charlier (60H) would start to the outside in second place as he was driving for Brian Huchko. The second row consisted of Frank Magill (05) and AJ Poljak (36). When the green light turned on, Kocuba (10) would pull away with the early lead. Lap two had Kocuba (10) still leading, Charlier (60H) in second, Poljak (36) in third, and Magill (05) in fourth. The top four would stay the same through lap 10 when the event’s lone caution would slow the pace and rerack the field. Kocuba (10) would choose the inside on the restart and he would retain his lead over the field when green replaced yellow. Kocuba would lead all laps of the event en route to his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed by Poljak (36) in second, Charlier (60H) in third, Magill (05) in fourth, and Jacob Billyk (4) in fifth. The heat race winner was Charlier (60H).
The Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks would start 18 cars for their 15-lap feature. Starting on the pole was Tony Magill (5). Starting to his outside in second place was Gary Koteles (65K). Jonathan Koteles (2K) and Garrett O’Patchen (25) made up the second starting row, while Stephen Shelpman (17S) started in fifth, and Logan Koteles (64K) completed the top three starting rows. When the green flag waved, T. Magill (5) would keep the early lead. He would lead until lap three when G. Koteles (65K) would take it over. The event’s only caution would come on lap seven and G. Koteles (65K) would choose the outside on the restart with T. Magill (5) to his inside. G. Koteles (65K) would retain his lead over the field when the returned to green flag action. Cody Koteles (1K) would eventually take over the second spot and Shelpman (17S) would follow him into third. G. Koteles (65K) would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up the win. He was followed to the line by C. Koteles (1K) in second, Frank Magill (05) in third, Shelpman (17S) in fourth, and T. Magill (5) in fifth. The heat race winners were Frank Magill (05) and Gary Koteles (65K).
In the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder five lap feature, Susie Rudolph (55) would start on the pole. Her dad Craig Rudolph (5R) would start to her outside in second and complete the two car field. When the green flag waved, S. Rudolph (55) would take off with the lead. She would spin out on lap two which brought out the caution. On the restart, S. Rudolph (55) would again pull away with the lead. Despite spinning out, she would lead all laps of the event and go on to pick up her second win of the season. C. Rudolph (5R) finished second. The Four-Cylinders did not run a heat race.
The All Ways Safe Young Guns six-lap feature had Emmerson Laboon (114) starting on the pole. Starting in second was Gavin Kokolis (91). The second row had Travis Clark (05T) starting in third, and Abby Gindlesperger (05) starting in fourth. When the green flag waved, Laboon (114) would take off with the early lead. On lap two, Clark (05T) made contact with Laboon (114) coming off of turn four which earned him a black flag DQ since it’s a no-contact division. During the contact, Cameron Hollister (44) was able to come from his last place starting spot to steal the lead. Hollister (44) would lead the remaining four laps of the event en route to his first Young Guns win of the season. He was followed to the line by Laboon (114) in second, Zoey Knight (78Z) in third, Kokolis (91) in fourth, Gindlesperger (05) in fifth, and Clark (05T) with the DQ in sixth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
