GARY KOTELES WINS THE 2ND ANNUAL JOSH LANGER MEMORIAL

Imperial, PA

PPMS was back in action on Saturday with the 2nd Annual Josh Langer Memorial for the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks, presented by JED Services. After last week’s partial rainout, this week, PPMS saw qualifying, a six-lap dash, six heat races, and eight feature events with three of those features being made up from last week. Gary Koteles (65K), from Stockdale, would lead all 20 laps of the 2nd Annual Josh Langer Memorial to pick up the win. The “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer (45), from Aliquippa, picked up his second win of the season for the Rohrich RUSH Dirt Late Models, while Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, picked up the win in the PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature but only by 0.023 seconds, and AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, won the makeup feature. Matt Knight (71), from Plum, won both features for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, while Emmerson Laboon (114), from Elizabeth, got the win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns, and Abby Gindlesperger (05), from Jefferson Hills, won the Young Guns make-up feature.

Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would be the fast-qualifier with a time of 23.856 for the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks but G. Koteles (65K) was only 0.321 seconds behind him. Also, Logan Koteles (64K), and Tony Magill (5) were both less than a second off of the fast-time. The field was broken into two heat races with the top three from each heat entering the redraw for the dash. T. Magill (5) would get his first career win when he won the six-lap dash, ensuring him the pole position in the 20-lap main event. In the 20-lap 2nd Annual Josh Langer Memorial Presented by JED Services, T. Magill was on the pole with G. Koteles (65K) to his outside starting second. The next starting row consisted of Matt Benard (15) starting in third and F. Magill (05) starting in fourth. When the green flag dropped, G. Koteles (65K) would take off with the early lead. The first caution would come early on lap two for debris on the track. When green replaced yellow, G. Koteles (65K) would keep his lead over the field. Lap four had G. Koteles (65K) leading the charge with T. Magill (5) in second and F. Magill (05) in third. Another caution would come on lap seven when the 74 of Leroy Brown spun out in turn two. G. Koteles (65K) would choose the outside on the restart and he had T. Magill (5) restarting on his inside. When the green flag waved, the field would complete only one lap before the yellow flag was out again for Matt Benard (15) who hit the wall between turns three and four causing a flat front tire. He would head to the pits to have his tire changed while the field was re-racked for the restart. When the field returned to green flag conditions, G. Koteles (65K) was again able to keep his lead while F. Magill (05) was now in second, and L. Koteles (64K) was now in third. With eight laps remaining in the event, the caution was out yet again for Benard (15) who hit the wall in turn one after already coming back out from the pits from his earlier flat tire. Officials would re-rack the field and throw the green flag. Despite pressure from F. Magill (05) for the lead, and a lap 15 caution, G. Koteles (65K) was able to hold him off and win the 2nd Annual Josh Langer Memorial Presented By JED Services. He was followed to the line by F. Magill (05) in second, Benard (15) finished third, after having to tag the field twice in the event, Jonathan Koteles (2K) finished fourth, and L. Koteles (64K) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were F. Magill (05) and G. Koteles (65K).

In the Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-Lap Feature, Brandon Burgoon (5X), from McDonald, would start on the pole. Starting to his outside in second was Tim Shaffer (45). The second row consisted of Mike Reft (9R), from Pittsburgh, starting in third, and Phillip Bubeck (4), from Colliers, West Virginia, starting in fourth. At the start of the event, Shaffer (45) would take off with the early lead as Burgoon (5X) would settle in behind him in second. Lap four had Shaffer (45) still leading, Burgoon (5X) still in second, Bubeck (4) in third, and Reft (9R) in fourth. The event’s first caution would come on lap four when the 58B of John Boring spun out in turn two. Shaffer (45) would take the outside on the restart with Burgoon (5X) on his inside. When green replaced yellow, Shaffer (45) would keep his lead while Burgoon (5X) would settle back into second, Reft (9R) moved up to third, and Bubeck (4) fell to fourth. Reft (9R) and Bubeck (4) would trade P3 and P4 spots several times as Shaffer (45) and Burgoon (5X) began to pull away from the rest of the field. Shaffer (45) and Burgoon (5X) would enter lapped traffic on lap 11 as they continued to run one and two respectively. Lap 12 brought another caution when Brian Hoffman (15H) hit the wall between turns three and four. Shaffer (45) would again choose the outside on the restart with Burgoon (5X) to his inside. When the green flag waved for the final time in the event, Shaffer (45) would keep his lead over the field. He would lead the remaining eight laps of the event to pick up his second Rohrich RUSH Late Model win of the season. Burgoon (5X) finished second, and by the time the rest of the field got to the finish line, Shaffer (45) and Burgoon (5X) had a full straightaway lead. Reft (9R) finished third while Bubeck (4) finished fourth, and Colby Beighey (36) completed the top five. The heat race winners were Shaffer (45) and Bubeck (4).

The PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stocks 15-lap feature was up next and Frank Magill (05) was the pole-sitter. Starting to his outside was Brian Huchko (60H) from Coraopolis. Nick Kocuba (10) and AJ Poljak (36) made up the second row, starting third and fourth respectively. When the green flag waved, it was a mad dash into turns one and two with Kocuba (10) coming out of turn two with the lead. Lap two had Kocuba (10) still leading, Huchko (60H) in second, Poljak (36) in third, Jacob Billyk (4) in fourth, Tanya Charlier (21) in fifth, and Jake Billyk (4JR) in sixth. Charlier (21) would put pressure on Jacob Billyk (4) to take away his fifth spot pretty much the entire race but Jacob was able to hold her off. Lap 11 saw the front runners get into lapped traffic which allowed Poljak (36) to catch Huchko (60H) and eventually get around him. The field stayed the same from lap two til the end of the event with Poljak (36) the exception. Kocuba (10) took the white flag with Poljak (36) hot on his heels. Coming out of turn four, the pressure was on from Poljak (36) for the lead. It was a photo finish but Kocuba (10) was able to hold on for the win, only by 0.023 seconds. Poljak (36) was second, Huchko (60H) third, Jacob Billyk (4) in fourth, Chalier (21) finished fifth, and Jake Billyk (4JR) finished sixth. The heat race winner was Poljak (36)

In the PPMS Pro Stock Makeup feature, Nick Kocuba (10) started on the pole. To his outside and starting second was AJ Poljak (36). The second row consisted of Brian Huchko (60H) starting third, and Frank Magill (05) starting fourth. When the green flag dropped, Poljak (36) came away with the early lead. The first caution came on lap four when Jake Billyk (4JR) spun out in turn two. Poljak (36) would choose the outside on the restart which put Kocuba (10) on his inside. Poljak (36) would keep his lead when green replaced yellow and Kocuba (10) would settle into second place. Another caution came on lap 11 when Frank Magill (05) hit the wall in turn two which flattened his passenger side tires. Poljak (36) again wanted the outside on the restart but now had Huchko (60H) on his inside. When the green flag waved, Poljak (36) would keep his lead, but the caution flag was out again two laps later for the 4JR of Jake Billyk who spun out a second time. Poljak (36) followed suit and chose the outside on the restart yet again, and had the 60H of Huchko to his inside. When green replaced yellow for the final time in the event, Poljak (36) would keep his lead, take the white flag, and then the checkered flag. He was followed by Huchko (60H) in second, Kocuba (10) third, Jacob Billyk (4) in fourth, Jake Billyk (4JR) in fifth, and Frank Magill (05) in sixth.

In the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder eight-lap feature, John Gill (19G), from Burgettstown, would start on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was Travis Clark (05T), from Pittsburgh, while Dan Moss (19M) started third, and Craig Rudolph (5R) started in fourth. At the start of the event, Gill (19G) would come away with the early lead. Moss (19M) would take over the lead on lap two which knocked Gill (19G) back to second. Lap three had Moss (19M) still leading, Gill (19G) still in second, and Matt Knight (71) already up to third after starting last. Knight would take over second on lap four and he would take the lead on lap six. Knight would lead the final two laps of the event to pick up the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder win. He was followed by (Gill 19G) in second, Moss (19M) in third, Rudolph (5R) in fourth, and Clark (05T) rounded out the top five. The heat race winner was John Gill (19G).

The Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder makeup feature had Knight (71) as the pole-sitter while Clark (05T) lined up next to him in second. Gill (19G) and Rudolph (5R) made up the second row, and Matt Keisel (3K) started in fifth. When the green flag dropped, Knight (71) would pull away with the early lead with Keisel (3K) coming from last place to settle in behind him in second. The race ran green to checkered in record fashion with Knight (71) picking up the win. Clark (05T0 finished second, Keisel (3K) finished third, Gill (19G) finished fourth, and Rudolph (5R) rounded out the top five.

The All Ways Safe Young Guns eight-lap feature had Zoey Knight (78Z), from Plum, starting on the pole. Starting second was Sumara Weaver (112W), from Daisyown, while Paige Jones (67), from Wellsburg, West Virginia, started third, Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, started fourth, and Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, started in fifth. When the green flag waved, Knight (78Z) had the early lead with Emmerson Laboon (114) coming from last place to settle into second by the start of lap two. Laboon (114) would take over the lead at the end of lap two. The race ran green to checkered with Laboon (114) getting the win. She was followed by Knight (78Z) in second, Abby Ginglesperger (05) in third, Snatchko (56) in fourth, and Kokolis (91) rounded out the top five. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.

In the All Ways Safe Young Guns makeup feature, Ginglesperger (05) was the pole-sitter. Lining up next to her and starting in second was Knight (78Z). Laboon (114) started in third while Snatchko (56) started in fourth, and Kokolis started in fifth. When the green flag waved, Gindlesperger (05) was able to keep the early lead but Knight (78Z) would take over on lap two. The caution would come out on lap three for Knight (78Z) who had car trouble in turn two which gave the lead back to Gindlesperger (05). She would choose the outside on the restart with Laboon (114) to her inside. When green replaced yellow, Gindlesperger (05) would keep the lead, and she would go the distance picking up her second Young Guns win of the season. She was followed by Laboon (114) in second, Snatchko (56) in third, Kokolis (91) fourth, and Jones (67) fifth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
