Short Track Super Series
Tyler Peet Climbs from 20th to win “Working Man’s Race” Sportsman Main; 130 Cars Jam Afton Pits
AFTON, NY – From 20th to first.
Tyler Peet drove from the 10th row to win Friday night’s Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Sportsman 25-lap event to kick off the 16th annual Short Track SuperNationals at Afton Motorsports Park.
Peet’s victory in the “Working Man’s Race” netted him $1,600.
Peet, of Lake Ariel, Pa., cleared race-long leader Randy Green with two laps remaining for his fourth series victory of the season.
Peet had previously clinched his Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. North Region title at N.Y.’s Fonda Speedway in late September. Friday’s program was a non-points-paying event.
Peet emerged from an intense five-car battle for the lead when he ducked beneath Green entering turn three on the 22nd lap.
Wallkill, N.Y.’s Green picked the pole during the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw and withstood numerous challenges from fellow front-row starter David Hackett Jr. while surviving a slew of restarts.
It wasn’t until Peet found a lane to Green’s inside that the top spot changed.
Peet drove on to the win over Green, Fulton, N.Y.’s Hackett, Randy’s brother Travis Green – who started 27th via a speedway provisional – and a rim-riding Jared Labagh of Middletown, N.Y., after starting 26th with a series provisional.
LaBagh appeared poised to sweep around the entire lead back before a caution broke his momentum on the 19th lap.
A massive field of 49 STSS Sportsman signed in for competition.
Devon Green was the JLR Technologies STSS Sportsman Hot Lap Hero with a lap of 15.380 seconds.
Heat winners were Randy Green, Butchie Irwin, Phil Recchio, Hackett and Todd Titus. Consolation victors were Matt Brewer and Chuck Lowe.
Twenty-seven STSS Modifieds checked into the pit area for practice laps leading into Saturday’s Short Track SuperNationals main event.
A pair of redraw positions for the fastest laps turned in the first two timed sessions went to Cody Higbie (14.696 seconds) and Dennis Clapperton (14.559 seconds).
The Afton Motorsports Park pit area was jammed with 49 STSS Sportsman, 27 STSS Modifieds, 37 FWD Four Cylinders and 17 600cc Modifieds for a total of 130 race cars.
The Short Track SuperNationals 16 weekend continues Saturday (Oct. 11) at Afton Motorsports Park with the Modifieds in a 50-lap, $4,000-to-win program plus the Shirley Shootout for Factory Stocks, Limited Sportsman and Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Racing Series.
Due to impending weather, times have been adjusted for the Saturday program with gates opening at noon, hot laps at 2 p.m. and racing at 3 p.m.
The parade through the Village of Afton now gets underway at 11 a.m.
