Dillard notches runner-up finish in World of Outlaws opener at Volusia
Making the 12-hour trip to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.), Cade Dillard was one of 38 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series entries on hand on Thursday afternoon to kick off the 2021 season with the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals. Taking the Top-4 from heat races, Cade posted a runner-up finish behind Dale McDowell, which positioned him sixth on the starting grid for the opening night feature. Clawing his way to the front, Dillard snuck past race-long pacesetter Kyle Bronson after the leader bobbled on lap 21 to assume command of the top spot. He began distancing himself from the field until a caution on lap 34 setup a late-race restart on lap-35. After contact with another competitor on the restart slowed his momentum, Cade slipped back to second in the closing laps, placing him second on the rundown behind Kyle Bronson with Kyle Strickler, Rick Eckert, and David Breazeale rounding out the Top-5. After Mother Nature wiped out the second round of the Sunshine Nationals on Friday, Dillard came in third in his qualifying group on Saturday before fading back to a seventh place finish in his heat. With a provisional already guaranteed, Cade elected to scratch from his B-Main and tag the tail for the $10,000-to-win finale. Getting slammed into by another competitor shortly after the halfway point of the feature, Dillard was forced pitside on lap 23 with severe damage to the rear-end of his No. 97 machine.
With the first weekend in the books, Cade is currently ninth in the World of Outlaws point standings.
