Cory Hedgecock
Pair of Top-5 finishes in Sunshine Nationals at Volusia
Cory Hedgecock made the trek to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Thursday afternoon piloting his VooDoo Technology No. 23 Late Model for the Crate Racin’ USA Winter Series sanctioned weekend. Drawing a stout field off 55 Late Models for the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals, Hedgecock laid down the second fastest lap in his time trial group before placing second in his heat behind John Baker. Starting the opening night feature in 10th, Cory muscled forward five spots in the 25-lapper to register a fifth-place finish behind Michael Page, Mack McCarter, Mark Whitener, and Kyle Bronson. Returning on Saturday after persistent rain wiped Friday night’s program, Cory passed five cars in his eight-lap heat to place third. Earning the 13th-starting position for the $10,000-to-win finale, Hedgecock gained nine spots to cross the line in fourth, but after post-race inspection found an illegal part on the winner, Cory was elevated to third. He trailed Kyle Bronson and Mack McCarter across the line with Jason Welshan and Joseph Joiner rounding out the Top-5.
