12th-place finish in DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals finale at Volusia
The Big Frog Motorsports team kicked off their 2021 season on Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) with Ross Bailes behind the wheel of the Dave’s Towing No. 58 Late Model for the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series season-opener. Drawing 38 cars for the three-day DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals, Bailes suffered a broken brake caliper in his heat race that saw him retire early. Coming short of a transfer spot into the opening night feature in his B-Main, Ross was granted a provisional into the show. With $10,000 on the line, Bailes was an early retiree from the 40-lapper after folding his nose under in the first half of the race. (Jacy Norgaard photo)
After losing Friday night’s program to Mother Nature, Ross laid down the second fastest lap in his time trial group on Saturday behind Parker Martin before picking up an eight-lap heat race victory. Earning the second-starting position for the $10,000-to-win finale via the redraw, Bailes was running in second for the majority of the 40-lap affair but slip-up over the cushion on lap 34 dropped him back to 12th.
