Carney Ends Out Regular Season With Runner-up Run At Cooper Classic
EL PASO, Texas (December 1, 2016) Teaming up with Mosher Racing for the Cooper Classic at Arizona Speedway with the Carlyle Tools ASCS Southwest Region, John Carney II ended out his 2016 season on a high note as the Mosher/Carney combination finished second in the $5,000 to win finale to the ASCS Southwest 2016 season.
While the weekend was an overall success, the opening night was far from what Carney was hoping for as the Consolidated Solar Technologies No. 12 ended up with a DNF after contact from another driver.
“Friday we were good. Started sixth in the Heat and ran third so that put us starting fifth in the Feature and I was running there until we had a couple cautions that put me up to second,” said Carney.
“I felt quick enough to pass the guy in front of me, and thought if anything, I could just hang out and get locked in and we’d be good but on the next restart the guy behind me tried to be a hero and slide me, but instead he ran into me so that wiped us both out.”
Returning Saturday with repairs made, Carney started off strong with a run from sixth to win in the Heat Race. Putting the No. 12 outside the front row, Carney chased Christopher Bell in a race that saw a lot of stop and go.
“I feel like I do better on longer runs, and we just kept having yellows and reds so about the time I’d get in a groove, something would happen, and I ended up getting slide by Netto for second,” stated John. “We were both chasing Bell until he got tangled up with lapped traffic, but after that it was clear track and not enough laps to get into traffic.”
Up next for John Carney II will be the 32nd running of the Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout in both Outlaw and Non-Wing Outlaw divisions for Shane Redline.
“I’m looking forward to it. Should be fun and hoping the laps I get at the Shootout can carry into a possible ride for the Chili Bowl. I’m still looking for a ride, so we’ll see what happens.”
For the season, Carney ended the year having run 58 events with 13 wins in ASCS National, ASCS Regional, NCRA, and IMCA 305cid competition. Along with a banner season of wins, Carney also picked up 32 top-five runs with 37 top-tens.
