Skinner Overcomes Late Arrival to Score Top-Five Finish During Season Opener
Inside Line Promotions – LEXINGTON, Tenn. (May 3, 2018) – A late arrival to the track failed to slow Marshall Skinner during his 2018 sprint car debut with the USCS Series last Saturday at Lexington 104 Speedway.
Skinner led most of the 30-lap feature before finishing fourth despite missing hot laps to open the night. He finished second in his heat race, which marked his first time on a track this year.
“We got kind of a late start and then the interstate was closed due to a bad wreck, which really made us late,” he said. “I was pretty happy with the way things went since the heat race was our first time on the track this year.”
A second-place finish from his pole starting position in the heat race placed Skinner sixth in points following the heat races. An inversion of six put him on the pole for the night’s main event.
“I was able to get the lead at the start and held it through a couple of restarts for about 25 laps,” he said. “But then my hands started getting numb and tired because I had to grip the steering wheel so tight since the track was really rough.
“I was running a line that felt good to me and I didn’t see or hear any other cars close to me. All of a sudden, someone blasted by me running a different line and then a couple more went by. I moved down to that line and found rubber and realized how they got by me.”
Despite losing the lead late in the race, Skinner was satisfied with a fourth-place finish during his season debut.
“I’m pretty sure my hands wouldn’t have been an issue if I had already raced several times this year like the others have,” he said. “And since it was my first race, I didn’t put a new right rear tire on like the others did. It was a pretty solid field of drivers – Tim Crawley, Tony Stewart, Derek Hagar and Jeff Swindell in addition to the USCS regulars. I’m pretty happy with the way it went after getting there late.”
A recent change in the USCS schedule has altered Skinner’s racing plans for this weekend.
“I’d planned to race the two races in Alabama this weekend until they cancelled them,” he said. “I think we’ll probably go to the new race they scheduled at ECM Speedway in Bremen, Ala., this Saturday if the weather looks good.”
