Hagar Produces First Victory of Season While Driving for Skinner

Inside Line Promotions – LEXINGTON, Tenn. (June 2, 2020) – Derek Hagar made the most of an opportunity to pilot a sprint car owned by life-long friend Marshall Skinner.

“I think it was a beer-driven idea that turned out good,” Hagar said while chuckling. “We were BS-ing on Memorial Day and he came up with it. About Thursday he said, ‘You sure you want to drive my car?’ I was like, ‘Hell yeah if you’re serious about it.’ So we slapped it together.”

The team ventured to Lexington 104 Speedway on Sunday for a USCS Series Speedweek event. Hagar, who hadn’t raced a sprint car since February, kicked off the action by hustling from eighth to third place in a heat race.

“I let Marshall’s boys draw for me and they brought me a high number back,” he said. “It worked out good for us. The sea parted on the start. I passed three cars going into turn one. Later in the race I worked my way to third. That put us second in points and Mark (Smith) drew a zero for the inversion.”

Hagar lined up on the outside of the front row next to Mark Smith, who won nine of the 11 previous USCS Series races this season.

“We really didn’t have anything for Mark, but an unfortunate circumstance for him gave us the lead as he got caught up with a lapped car,” Hagar said.

Hagar inherited the lead and maintained the top spot for the final third of the race to garner his first triumph of the season. It was his second victory in his last four races at the track dating back to 2017.

Hagar plans to drive for Britt Motorsports this Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., during an ASCS Mid-South Region event.
