Burke Shines in Formula Race Promotions Action With Win at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta

Inside Line Promotions – BRASELTON, Ga. (Nov. 5, 2020) – Trey Burke didn’t know what to do when he drove across the finish line at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta last Saturday.

You can’t blame him. In only his sixth race running a F1600 car under the Formula Race Promotions banner, Burke crossed as the winner and took his spot at the top of the podium. Even his teammate and series champion, Simon Sikes, was speechless.

“I didn’t really know what to do,” Burke said. “I just kind of threw my hands up. My teammate pulled up next to me and we didn’t know what to do.

“We both threw our hands up and when we went to tech we jumped out of the car and we were smiling. Overall, it was a really good race. It’s not quite the biggest win of my career, but for sure in the top five.”

Burke started off the weekend last Friday by qualifying on the outside pole for the first of three races. He finished sixth after losing out in a four-car battle in the draft.

In the second event, which occurred on Saturday, Burke lined up seventh after the starting grid was determined by the fastest laps in the first race. This time, Burke won a late four-car flurry on the final lap and came away with a satisfying third-place finish.

That set Burke up for the final event later that day. He started on the outside pole and used his experience from the Lucas Oil School of Racing and his first five F1600 events to make an impressive last-lap pass to claim the victory.

“The third-place finish was good coming from seventh,” he said. “There were probably four or five of us really going at it. We went four-wide into the last corner and I could out-brake everybody and I got the spot.

“The win was huge. We all kind of drafted each other and I was third on the last lap, four car-lengths behind first and second. We went four wide and I just out-breaked everybody and forced first and second to go side-by-side through the chicane. That pretty much got me the lead I needed.”

It hasn’t taken Burke long to adjust to his new surroundings. In six races, he has four top-five finishes, including a win, as well as a sixth-place run.

“Starting in Pittsburgh we didn’t really know what to expect, but this is for sure the best team to go with,” Burke said. “I think preparation from the Lucas School really helped me out. They kind of race the same way and it’s really draft oriented.

“It’s very big on drafting up, passing and being patient. Being aggressive on the brakes and using downshifts to slow the car down really helped. It’s just little things I’ve picked up over the years.”

The weekend in Georgia closed out Burke’s 2020 racing season. As for his next venture, it will be back to the dirt scene for January races in Tulsa, Okla., before embarking on a 2021 campaign that features more asphalt ventures.
