CALIFORNIA, Mo. – For the second consecutive Sunday night, Sedalia, Mo. sprint car driver Jonathan Cornell was victorious at Double-X Speedway. The result came following a fourth-place finish in the first-ever National Sprint League Show-Me Region event on Saturday night at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Mo.

Cornell was originally scheduled to kick off the weekend in what would have been the first Show-Me Region race on Friday. However, persistent rain in the St. Louis area throughout the week forced the cancellation of the event at Tri-City Speedway, just across the state line in Granite City, Ill. Instead, Callaway would start the series off; 23 sprint cars arrived at the quarter-mile to do battle. Three heat races would help set the feature lineup. Starting fifth in heat two, Cornell fought forward and came out with a runner-up finish.

The top-eight redraw put Cornell, who was second in passing points after heat races, at the tail of the redraw, starting eighth. The flat oval showcased racing primarily around the inside of the speedway, but Cornell made the facility work enough to power up to fourth by the end of the 25-lapper.

Back in action at Double-X, the four-time track champion Cornell began the night from the tail of his heat race in sixth. Regardless, Cornell quickly collected the lead and picked up his third heat victory in as many races at the California, Mo. oval thus far this season.

Starting from the pole of the 25-lap main event, it quickly became apparent that Cornell had the dominant car on the speedway. With only 12 feature starters, he still reached the tail of the field within eight laps, clipping off fast, consistent laps to do so. By the time the first caution emerged with 16 down, Cornell had managed to put half a lap between he and the nearest challenger. On the restart, as well as one for another caution two laps later, Cornell quickly completed the remaining circuits with precision and nabbed the victory.
