I-35 SPEEDWAY RACE RECAP WEEKEND 3

Always exciting door to door, nose to tail, racing was the standard at the legendary I-35 Speedway for weekend 3 of racing on May 22 and May 23, 2020. Early Tractor Night at the Races provided great entertainment for all in attendance. The track, still in compliance with the local and state Covid19 requirements, ran both Friday and Saturday Nights to a social distancing grandstand and pit area. The USRA Stock Cars doubled up racing both Friday and Saturday, the Sport Compacts, E Mods, and Pure Stocks joined the Stock Cars on Friday, while the Midwest Limited Late Models, the USRA A and B Mods raced on Saturday night with the USRA Stock Cars.

The always super smooth racing surface provided lots of racing action. In preparation for returning to one night of racing on Saturday Nights, the E Mods led the way taking the first green flag of the night. Chris Dishong and Casey Burnett claimed the heat race wins. Feature time saw Burnett grab the lead from the outside front row start and hold off the rest of the field. A late yellow allowed Shaunie Lanning to challenge Burnett for the lead until she brought out a yellow with a part failure allowing Burnett to cruise to the win. The Pure Stocks were the second class of the night to conquer the high banks with heat wins by Cody Ohrenburg, DJ Barnes, and Logan Headley. Come the feature, Headley grabbed the early lead and would not relinquish it for anyone who challenged him, taking home the trophy. The Sport Compact feature was again won by John Willard but Jason McCaulley is quite the show trying to get around Willard in both the heat race and the feature. At times McCaulley was bumper to bumper and a couple of times side by side with Willard. Joseph Mick won the second Sport Compact heat race. The USRA Stock Cars were born for excitement. Austin Bouzek was apparently the man to beat on this night winning his heat and leading the most laps of the feature. However, a late racecar failure allowed Doug Keller and another heat winner, Gary Donaldson to zip past Bouzek for a one two finish with Bouzek coasting to sixth on the last lap.

Night number 2 brought even more exciting racing! The Late Models were the first to take the track and the heat wins went to veteran drivers Kerry Davis and Gregg Truelove. The feature win though went to hard charging smooth driving Houston Johnson. Johnson passed leader Tommy Cordray on the high side coming out of turn 4 coming to the white flag with a move which belies his few years of racing. As Cordray drove low, Johnson stayed high, built up his momentum to shoot down the straight and grab the lead and be the first to the checkered, pure excitement for drivers and fans! A star-studded field of USRA B Mods was once again in attendance, the Top 16 in passing points made the A Feature with the remainder of the field going to a B Feature. The top 8 from the B Feature transferred to the A. At the drop of the green flag the four wide battles for position became the norm. When the checkered fell for the USRA B Mods, Ethan Isaacs was first, Shadren Turner second, and Jeremy Chambers third. USRA B Mod heat winners were Gene Claxton, Chambers, Tyler Cadwallader, and Turner. USRA Stock Cars have become a throw your blanket over the field crowd especially when the field is led by heat race winners, Brett Heeter, Jeff Dixon, and Doug Keller. As the green flag flew from the flagman the Stock Car battle was on. First to the checkered was Keller ahead of Dixon and the fast-moving Derrick Brown. Ed Noll and Mark Dotson claimed victory in the USRA A Mod heats making for a fast-starting front row for the feature. Dotson grabbed the early lead and never relinquished it bringing home the victory. Chad Clancy was second and CJ Lyle finished in the third.

Three weeks into this new world we live in and six nights of super exciting racing are in the books. On May 30, I-35 Speedway returns to Saturday night racing for all classes. Listed below are the race results for weekend 3.
