Angst, Turner, Bailey, Keller among McCarthy Championship Night winners at I-35 Speedway
By Philip Wilson (Winston, MO) -- The final checkered flag fell on Mike and Kyle Johnson’s 14th season at the helm of I-35 Speedway as all 2021 champions were crowned on McCarthy Auto Group Championship Night at I-35 Speedway. One hundred and twenty cars flooded the pit area as the track crew preserved the last night of racing after Mother Nature dumped 3inches rain over the past week. The I-35 Speedway racing family came together to celebrate and remember the life of the late Brandon Hartman.
The E-mods were first to hit the track as long time racing veteran George Burnett finally found his way back to victory lane. Brayden Bennett rebounded from an earlier mishap to finish second. Adam Dunwoodie continues a stellar season with a third-place finish. Lane Mathews puts a cap on his rookie season finishing fourth and last week’s feature winner James ‘Bubba’ Silkwood finished fifth. Congratulations to your 2021 E-mod track champion, with an outstanding 12 feature wins, Michael Taylor III.
In Pure Stock action, James Johnson waited until the last race of the season to capture his first career feature win. Johnson had his hands full as Ava Dixon was all over his back bumper to finish second. Third spot went to Ava’s coach and father Brandon Dixon, fourth went to a re-emerging Tobin Bartlett and fifth spot went to Rieli Yonts. Congratulations to your 2021 Pure Stock track champion, with a great nine feature wins, Rieli Yonts.
In the Midwest Limited Late Models, Shayne Bailey picked up his second feature win driving for Michael Dodson. Bailey had a few challenges, but ultimately pulled away. Coming into tonight, Kerry Davis held a slim 16-point lead over Tommy Cordray, Davis would finish second, followed by Paul Glendenning, Tommy Cordray and Colt Leal. Congratulations, for the second season in a row, to Kerry Davis for picking up the track championship with 10 feature wins.
In the USRA B-mods Shadren Turner picked up feature win number eight, his second since he started driving for Troy Whitt. Josh Roney, a newcomer to I-35 Speedway finished second. Kyler Girard picked up 14 spots to finish third. Tyler Cadwallader rebounded from an earlier spin to finish fourth and Colin Pierce continued his consistent season finishing fifth. Congratulations to your USRA B-mod track champion Tyler Cadwallader, with an excellent 10 feature wins.
The action was fierce as the USRA Stock Cars went green to checker in their feature. Doug Keller emerged victorious for the second time this season, followed by Jason Estes, Brady Derry, Nic Hanes and Kasey Ayres. Congratulations to your 2021 USRA Stock Car track champion Michael Knight, as he also captured his first feature win this season.
Top three USRA Modifieds National points runner John Angst made the trip from Minnesota and waged war with I-35 Speedway regular Lee Hibner as they swapped the lead back and forth. In the end, Angst made the trip a victorious one as he picked up the win. Hibner would finish second. Jason Cummins, another Minnesota native who sits fifth in the national points, finished third. Houston Johnson finished fourth and Shayne Bailey fifth. Congratulations to your 2021 USRA Modifieds track champion Houston Johnson, who had 9 feature wins in the USRA Modifieds to go along with 3 in the Midwest Limited Late Models for an outstanding total of 12 feature wins for the season.
To finish off the night, the Sport Compacts paid tribute to Brandon Hartman before their 10-lap feature event. Chris Vannausdle picked up his first feature win in only his second appearance at I-35 Speedway and his last appearance in the Midwest before he moves to South Carolina. Keegan Russell finished second, Trent Reed third, Isaiah Penton fourth and Devin Schmidt fifth. Congratulations to your 2021 Sport Compact track champion Harold Robb Sr.
Next weekend the final chapter of the 2021 season will be written as we celebrate our Champions of I-35 Speedway with our season ending points championship celebration. Join us next season for year number 15 of the Mike and Kyle Johnson era at I-35 Speedway!
