JJ Baumli Dominates Joe Crist Memorial Stock Car Shootout

OSBORN, Mo. – Drivers from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska all checked in to make up the 23-car field that battled for 30 laps to settle the third annual Joe Crist Memorial.

Pole-sitter, Thomas Roberts, took the early lead and the lead the first several laps. JJ Baumli, worked the bottom of the racetrack early before settling for second. After an early caution, Baumli showed his dominance when he perfected the restart and took the lead away from Roberts.

In a race that saw plenty of restarts, many drivers had a chance to move around Baumli, but his restarts were too strong. Each restart, Baumli would put multiple car lengths between his competitors. Roberts, Travis Barker and Brad Whitney would all have attempts from the second position on restarts and none of them could figure out how to match Baumli.

On the final restart, with two laps remaining, Baumli drove away for the final time and picked up the $1,262 winner’s check. Brad Whitney, who started tenth, patiently worked his way to finish second.

Mich Ross followed Whitney to finish third after starting 14th. Blake Peeler had a more interesting route to a top five finish. After starting fifth, Peeler brought out the first caution. He took a trip to the hot lane, before making it back to the track to start at the rear of the field. He used the remaining laps to drive all the way back to a fourth-place finish. Mike Nichols finished fifth after starting 11th.

The IMCA Modifieds also dealt with many cautions and restarts. Jacob Brock took the early lead and led the first few circuits. Shayne Bailey and Clay Hale both looked to have the speed to move around Brock. On one of the early restarts, they split Brock, but Bailey got out in front of Hale. Bailey then found more a little more speed and dominated the rest of the race. Hale maintained his second-place spot for the remainder of the race. Chad Clancy drove from eighth to finish third. Trey Duensing finished fourth after starting 11th and Dustin Miller rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Sport Mod race, the only race not to see a caution, continued the trend of dominating performances. Nicholas Carpenter used his outside pole position to grab the early lead. Carpenter consistently put down the fastest laps on the track and drove away from the field. While Carpenter cruised to a win, six cars battled all race for positions second through seventh. Jeffrey Sears hung on to beat the best of the rest and finish second. Chris Wright finished third, Steven Clancy fourth and Cade Richards fifth.

The IMCA Sprint Cars also saw a dominating performance from Jack Potter, who finally found Westfall GMC Victory Lane. With US 36 points leaded Matt Richards not in attendance, either Mike Houseman Jr. or Mike Moore would assume that lead, as only one point separated the two. On lap two, the two drivers caught wheels, and both went for a wild ride into turn one. Both drivers climbed from their machines but now find themselves tied in points. After the clean-up, Potter put together a full race to pick up the win. Potter has had wins in his grasp earlier in the season before bad luck found him dropping out. This night, Potter would have none of that and got the win. Ryan Navratil finished second, with Val Urman third, Kenny Potter fourth and Chad Jarrett fifth.

In another caution filled E-Modified race, current US 36 points leader Gary Ainsworth stayed patient and safely worked his way to the front. Multiple cautions and a lengthy red-flag period found the E-Mods at their time limit. For the second race in a row, race officials cut the race short and Ainsworth earned the win. Scott Crockett finished second from his pole position. Josh Adkins drove from 12th to finish third. Jim Masoner Jr. and Casey Anderson made up the rest of the top five.

Up next at US 36 Raceway is Kids Night, Friday, Aug. 2. featuring the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, Pure Stocks and E-Modifieds.
