NORWAY SPEEDWAY HOSTS FINALE OF SUPER MOD TRIPLE CROWN

The Triple Crown Series for the Escanaba Motor Speedway Super Mods will end at Norway Speedway on Friday, August 8, 2025. The Degnan family of Escanaba organized this series and will present a one of a kind traveling trophy to the champion. Sands Speedway hosted the second leg of the Triple Crown on August 3rd. The grandstand opens at 6:00 PM EST. Arrive early and enjoy the practice, scuff sessions and qualifying. Green flag racing begins at 8:00 PM EST. Check out Norway Speedway on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/norwayspeed) and the Norway Speedway website for details.(https://norwayspeedway.com/) The Don Anderson Memorial Race sponsored by Anderson Auto & RV Sales will feature the Auto Value Super Stocks, Coca Cola Late Models, 141 Auto Sales Sportsman, Sport Trucks and Whelen 4 Cylinders. In addition to the Triple Crown Super Mods there will be Spectator Eliminators.

When it comes to racing and family the Degnan family of Escanaba has a long and exemplary history. They are the epitome of good sportsmanship. Last year Scott Degnan was interviewed by Adam Hinch, Sports Reporter for the Daily Press in Escanaba and shared how it all began. Scott went to the races to help with towing cars and the next week he was behind the wheel! [Check out the tag to the Daily Press article].(https://www.dailypress.net/sports/local-sports/2024/07/degnan-family-finds-common-passion-in-auto-racing/)

In 2010 when a group of volunteers began working to bring racing back to Escanaba, the Degnan family was all in. Scott and Karen were regulars at work bees and had their young children Macy and Drake in tow. Macy and Drake had their little plastic pails and helped pick rocks on the soon to be small dirt track. When the inaugural Upper Peninsula International Raceway season ended Karen wheeled her pink Sportsman Micro-Sprint into victory lane as the track champion.

The Degnan’s took a few years off to enjoy camping, fishing and other activities with their families. I admire parents who encourage their children to participate in other sports and hobbies until they find their niche. It is not always about winning, but the memories made together as a family and their children learning life lessons.

When the Degnan family returned to racing the fans and drivers alike were excited to see them back.. Now as young adults Macy and Drake have followed the example of their parents and are staples at the track. Macy is on the Board of Directors for Escanaba Motor Speedway, designs and posts Facebook news and races a Sportsman Micro-Sprint. Drake powers his Street Stock and Super Mod. He is a class act like his parents and a humble young man. Watching Scott and Drake battle it out in the Super Mod class is a highlight for the fans. Karen no longer races but is a backbone of the Escanaba Motor Speedway organization. She is on the PR and Marketing Committee and publishes the colorful race programs with emphasis on sponsors and special events. Under the grandstand there are large wooden tires against a wall with pictures of race cars colored by young fans. Karen sets up a table with crayons and a variety of race car designs each race. Winners are randomly chosen and can claim their prize the following race. The heat and feature winners of each class are presented with a silk pennant designed and printed by Karen. Back in the pits Karen is the videographer, photographer, pit crew and keeps everything and everyone organized.

We thank the Degnan family for their dedication, sportsmanship and bringing a new event to our neighboring tracks. Asphalt or Dirt? Racers and fans are fortunate to have our tracks work together to promote racing in the Upper Peninsula.
