Layton, Weller victorious in Bedford double header
BEDFORD, PENNSYLVANIA – It was double the fun for the Capitol Renegade United Racing Club this weekend at Bedford Speedway as the 360 sprint cars ran two feature events at the fairgrounds speedway.
The 2018 URC champion, Josh Weller, started on the pole for the first 25-lap A-Main and paced the field from the drop of the green flag. The first 21 laps of the race went uninterrupted, allowing Weller to pull away to an almost half-lap lead over Chad Layton and Curt Michael.
However, a caution was thrown on Lap 21, during which Weller’s machine came to a stop in Turn 2 with a flat tire.
Second-place Layton assumed the lead for the restart, holding it over the final four laps of the event to claim his first career Bedford Speedway victory. Michael, Derek Locke, Jason Shultz and Troy Betts rounded out the top five. Betts and Weller took home the victories in the two qualifying heat races.
The second feature, which was a make-up race for a rained out event last August, ran green the entire 25 laps, with Weller again starting on the pole and this time landing in Victory Lane. Michael, Layton, Locke and Shultz claimed finishing positions two through five.
The following evening’s event at Delaware International Speedway was canceled due to inclement weather.
The next URC-sanctioned event is scheduled for Thursday, May 23 at New Egypt Speedway, followed by Friday (May 24) evening action at Big Diamond Speedway and Saturday (May 25) night racing at Selinsgrove Speedway.
After Friday’s competition, Layton continues to hold his lead of the 2019 Capitol Renegade United Racing Club point standings, followed by Weller, Michael, Jason Shultz and Austin Bishop.
