RICKY PAYNE TAKES TOP ELIMINATOR ON U.S. 13’S 52ND ANNIVERSARY

By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – It could not have been a better day than Sunday for the 52nd Anniversary, William J. & Juanita Cathell Memorial Chevy Show, Shine and Drags. A huge crowd was on hand to see the array of Chevy show cars and a great field of drag cars and bikes. Ricky Payne of Salisbury, Md. piloted the Alan Bradford dragster to the win in Top Eliminator. Hometown racer David Hornsby took the win in Pro while James Farmer of Milford, Del. was back on top in Pro Bike. Lewis Jones of Newark, Md. won the highly anticipated final in the The List Top 10 Grudge Series. Other winners on the day included: John Elias of Delmar in Street; Ryan Lecates of Salisbury in Hot Rod; Keith Riddle of Millsboro, Del. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Dacia Powell of Mardela Springs, Md. in Jr. Dragster 2.

 

It was “dragster vs. door slammer� in the Top Eliminator final as Ricky Payne took on Brooks Moore in his ’67 Camaro. Payne was on his dial and took the win with a 7.876/165.41 on a 7.87 dial-in. Moore ran a 10.103/132.82 on a 10.06 dial. Semi-finalists were Rusty Brady who lost to Moore and Clayton Byerly who lost to Payne. It was Payne’s first win of the season.

 

David Hornsby picked up his first win of the year winning the Pro final over Glenn Groton. Hornsby in his ’70 Nova ran a 10.026/130.90 on a 10.01 for the win. Groton in his ’78 Chevy Malibu broke out with an 11.113/118.65 on an 11.15 dial. Semi-finalists were Ronald Nichols who lost to Hornsby and Roonnie Bishop who lost to Groton.

 

It was a pair of veterans as James Farmer rode his Hayabusa into the Pro Bike final against D.J. Lockwood on his ’12 Ninja. Farmer took the win with an 8.567/146.15 on an 8.54 dial. Lockwood ran an 8.858/156.22 on an 8.68 dial. Semi-finalist was Tony Mumford who lost to Lockwood while Farmer had the bye run.

 

John Elias scored his second win of the year in Street over Sharon Landry. Elias in his ’81 AMC had the better reaction and took the win with a 12.897/104.37 on a 12.89 dial. Landy was also on her dial in her ’02 Camaro running a 13.288/99.26 on a 13.28.

 

In Hot Rod it was Ryan Lecates in his ’88 Chevy Blazer picking up his second win over Sam Schman in his ’09 Pontiac. Lecates had the better reaction which led to his win with an 11.705/103.95 on an 11.64 dial. Schman ran a 12.930/108.43 on a 12.90 dial.

It was “Cash Day� for the List Top Ten Grudge Series. It was green light only eighth-mile racing with Lewis Jones in an ’87 Chevy S-10 coming out on top over Lance White in an ’89 Mustang. Semi-finalist was William Bowen in a ’67 Camaro who lost to Jones while White had the bye.

 

The Jr. Dragsters were racing for 52nd Anniversary plaques. In Jr. Dragster 1 it was Keith Riddle ringing up his eighth win of the year over Zach Shirkey. Shirkey had the better start but broke out with a 12.009 on a 12.02 dial. Riddle took the win with an 8.962/71.70 on an 8.94 dial. In Jr. Dragster 2 it was Dacia Powell over Tyler Powell in a close run. Dacia ran a 7.981/82.03 on a 7.97 dial while Tyler ran a 7.958/81.16 on a 7.93 dial. It was Dacia’s second win of the year.
