Big Game Motorsports Drivers Dollansky and Swindell Eye National Open
Inside Line Promotions - FREMONT, Ohio (Oct. 1, 2013) - Big Game Motorsports drivers Craig Dollansky and Sammy Swindell are only days away from the second-highest paying event of the season.
Williams Grove Speedway hosts this weekend's 51st annual National Open, which features the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at the $50,000-to-win event in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
"It's a place where there's going to be enough cars there the qualifying draw is going to put you in or out of the field," said Swindell, who won the top prize in 2010 and 1997. "I think we've been good there over the seasons. It can be tough. You never know what you're going to get there."
Dollansky led 23 of the first 24 laps in his Eyecon Trail Cameras car last year before being caught up in another driver's crash.
"It's definitely an event I enjoy going to," Dollansky said. "We were close last year. We're going to go in there with all we've got and hopefully come out of there with a win."
With only a handful of races remaining in the season, both Big Game Motorsports drivers said they are working to remedy the problems that have hampered their seasons to end the year on a positive note. Swindell and Dollansky said they experimented with some parts and setup decisions last Saturday at Fremont Speedway when the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series tackled the track for only the sixth time.
"We sure would like to have things operating a little better than what we are right now," Dollansky said. "It's not like we haven't been in position to win some races as well. We experimented the other night and obviously weren't any good with what we tried to experiment with. We will continue to work to finish this year out strong as well as have a baseline for the following year."
Dollansky qualified the Eyecon Trail Cameras car 25th quickest and was caught in an early crash in his heat race. After going to the work area and then returning to fix a stuck throttle during a caution on Lap 4, Dollansky advanced to capture the fourth-and-final lock-in position to the feature.
Swindell and his Big Game Treestands team faced an uphill battle from the start as well. He qualified 22nd quickest and picked up the fourth position in his heat race to advance to the main event.
"We had a new car that we made some changes and did some other things that I was wanting to do," Swindell said. "It got us off a little bit. We didn't get much practice, about three laps, and then we qualified. What we did, it changed the way the car goes around. We tried to start off like we had been starting off."
Starting toward the back of the feature, both Big Game Motorsports drivers experimented.
"In the A Main we struggled pretty bad," Dollansky said after finishing 21st. "We definitely weren't where we needed to be. We made some pretty big changes with shocks and it didn't work."
Swindell was caught in a crash on Lap 5 and had to restart last - 28th. However, he maneuvered the Big Game Treestands car to a seventh-place result.
"We had a good car and was able to work in traffic," he said. "I was able to pass cars when I had an opportunity. The trace track wasn't real good for passing unless a guy missed a line. To start back there and finish where we were it was a good. It was one race, but hopefully we learned some things from that. We're going to try to expand on some more stuff the rest of the year to figure out exactly where we want to go for next year."
Swindell has a 10-point advantage over Dollansky for fifth place in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings with five features remaining.
