Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 15, 2019) – Sammy Swindell made a lot of progress during his season-opening sprint car race last Friday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
The Thone Motorsports driver kicked off the Texas Outlaw Nationals by timing in 13th quickest during World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series qualifying.
“When we went out for hot laps we were sixth overall and real close,” he said. “We made a couple of changes and went the wrong direction I guess. The car was pushing off the corners. It doesn’t take much to be from the front to the back.”
Swindell then finished seventh in a heat race, which relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown.
“We did a couple of things for the heat, but we still weren’t really happy with where we were at,” he said. “I think I could have passed a car (to transfer directly into the main event), but I thought it was better we had some time on the track than try to move up a row or so. It worked out. We went out for the Last Chance Showdown and ran quicker laps than they did in the dash. I knew we made a lot of better changes.”
Swindell won the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the 19th starting position for the main event.
“We did just a little more for the main and we passed cars right away,” he said. “It didn’t take long and the track rubbered down. I ran the fifth quickest lap overall. We definitely went in the right direction.”
Swindell gained five positions and was credited with the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars after placing 14th.
“We weren’t that far off to begin with,” he said. “We just need to get all of our stuff lined out. It was a good start to the season. We know of a couple of things we did wrong that hurt us and we found a couple of things the car and motor liked so we should be ahead of that the next time we go out.”
Saturday’s event finale rained out.
Swindell and Thone Motorsports will take this weekend off before returning to action with the World of Outlaws April 26 at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo.; April 27 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo.; and April 28 at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill.
