Mullens drives to HMT victory at Salt City Racing
Earns $2,500 Payday for Third Career HMT Triumph
WICHITA, Kan. (04/30/25) – Until Friday, it had been three years since Tanner Mullens last competed at Salt City Racing at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. In his return to one of his favorite tracks, the Sunflower State native scored a $2,500 victory with the USRA Heartland Modified Tour (HMT) behind the wheel of his Mel Hambelton Ford / Sandlian Iron & Metal Auto Salvage No. 02 Mullens Racing Chassis Modified.
Friday’s triumph propelled Mullens into a three-way tie atop the tour’s all-time wins list, joining Tyler Wolff and Randal Schiffelbein Jr., with each driver holding three career victories.
“I really love coming to this place,” Mullens said in the Heartland Modified Tour Victory Lane. “It means a lot to our family to be here. I can't thank Phil and Lisa and Nic (enough), just everybody that puts effort into saving this place. To see racing here more often, it's something special. I really enjoy coming to support the Heartland Tour. We just tried to pace ourselves pretty good. I was hoping we didn't catch lapped traffic. That was going to be pretty wild.”
Thirty-nine Modifieds were in the pit area at the half-mile oval in Hutchinson, Kansas, for the track’s 2025 season opener. Mullens, making his first HMT start of the year, qualified his No. 02 car second in his group and went on to win his heat race from the pole. He began the 25-lap feature from the top spot after the redraw and wired the field, taking the checkered flag 1.149 seconds ahead of Paden Phillips. Third place went to Dean Wille, with Brandon Givens finishing fourth and Chevy Coleman coming home fifth.
Mullens’ victory was his second feature triumph overall this season.
Saturday’s slated HMT event at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas, was washed out.
