Scotty Thiel
Scotty Thiel - Hard Charger at Beaver Dam!
A weekend off of racing for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team made for an eager night to get back to the track. Saturday night brought the team to Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI to run their ascs 360 car with the IRA 410 Sprint Car Series. Last time they had done that, back at 141 Speedway Memorial Day Weekend, Scotty pulled off a Solid top five finish. This time around, a struggling qualifying effort made for some driving efforts to be done in the A-main.
Scotty drew a seven (7) pill for qualifying and the team prepared for what was a fairly slick track. Thiel came out of turn four to take the green and charged hard on the bottom groove. Three and four was a challenge and Scotty slid up a little high, costing him some time, and would cross the line with a 13.901 qualifying lap. It was good enough for a 19th overall time out of 35 cars. Although the time was not the greatest, it still benefited the team for the heat race by being placed on the outside front row.
After struggling on the start of the heat, Scotty had to make up some ground on the leader and fell to the third position after the first lap. He began to get patient and work over the bottom groove of the track. Several laps later he reeled in the second place car and began to put pressure on. Scotty moved up and worked the middle groove to gain momentum and shut the door going into turn three the next lap and took over the second place position. Only a few laps remained and Thiel would finish second, locking him into the night’s 30 lap Bumper to Bumper IRA A-Main event.
The teams qualifying effort showed effect after the B-main results came in as the IRA gives the qualifying times back to the B-main transfer cars. Scotty would have to start in the 15th position and knew he would have to work hard to get through the field. The cars were pushed off and got lined up into their positions. The signal for the four wide salute was given and the field set four abreast for the fans. After getting lined back up they took one more lap and were given the green flag! Scotty started off working the low line and battled with some cars. A caution flew early for a car slowing down the backstretch. After getting lined back up, they came down for the green. Thiel charged hard and decided to see what the high side had to offer. He worked the line for a lap and began to make several passes for position. He moved up several spots before a red flag flew for a car flipping in turn three. Scotty got into the wall a little to avoid the wreck but the car was okay. With plenty of laps left, Scotty continued to work the high side after returning to green flag action. He worked his way up several more positions and was finally into the top ten. With only six laps to go, a red flag flew and Scotty was sitting in the eighth position. The final few laps were crucial as Thiel knew he had a good car but needed to get a good run in order to get around a solid field of 410 cars. Track conditions were great for Thiel as they went back to green. Scotty continued to work the cushion and made a pass coming out of turn four and moved into the next spot. He worked over one more position with only two laps to go. Now, sitting in the sixth spot, Thiel tried everything he could to reel in the rest of the top five cars that were only a few car lengths ahead. He fell short to make any more passes but crossed the line in the sixth position and earned the night’s Hard Charger for passing nine cars!
“Woah, that was crazy fun out there! This little ascs 360 was bad fast out there and we made it work for everything it had. The car was a dream to drive and it was just an awesome night for our team! We needed another caution or a few more laps to jump into that top five. We were close that is for sure, they were all right there at the line.” An excited Scotty Thiel after the A-main event.
The next stop for the STM team will be this coming weekend. They should be picking up their MSA motor this week and be able to run Manitowoc on Friday night and Saturday night at Plymouth, were thee Tony Stewart will make his 410 appearance with the IRA. The alternative option for the team will be to run their ascs car again, with the IRA at Plymouth.
