Good Start Bad Finish for Thiel at Oshkosh

Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports team headed to the Oshkosh Speedzone with the IRA 410 Sprint car series this past Friday night. Heavy rains were in the area that morning and made for a tacky race track all night long. The 64 was going to be at a disadvantage due to running only an ASCS 360 against the 410 cars. Scotty of course picked a high number pill forcing him to be in the later portion of time trials.

During Thiel’s qualifying attempt, a valve cover came lose and caused an excessive amount of smoke to come out from under the hood. Scotty made one lap and pulled off. A slower time caused for Scotty to start in the fourth row of the heat race event. A tacky race track would make passing difficult for everyone but especially Thiel by being under power. The field took the green for the fast ten lap heat race and Scotty settled in the seventh position for the first few laps. He was able to make the pass and moved up into the sixth spot, only a few car lengths behind the top five cars. He was able to hold his ground but didn’t have enough to get the extra edge and came home in the sixth position, one spot out of the A-Main transfer.

The crew prepared the car for the B-main event that would still hold a rough and tacky track. After getting pushed off, Scotty noticed he didn’t have any breaks. He pulled into the work area and was able to pump them back up. He had to tag the rear of the field and would come to take the green in the 11th spot. After taking the green, Scotty worked the high side to move up several positions in the early laps. A red flag came out for a car flipping hard down the front stretch. After getting the wreck cleaned up, Scotty moved up into the sixth position. The field came back for the green and Scotty charged up top in turn one and made a pass on three cars, moving himself to the third position. Thiel never looked back and would take the checkered flag in the third spot and a transfer to the A-main.

After lineups were posted, Scotty would go on to start 18th in the nights 30 lap Bumper-to-Bumper A-main event. The track continued to hold moisture and would be a fast track all race long. The field got lined back up after the four wide salute and prepared to take the drop of the green flag. The field stormed out of turn four to take the green and charged into turn one. Scotty worked the middle groove for the first few laps and made a few passes for position. An early caution came out for a car stopping in turn three. After returning back to green, Thiel went on a mission and began to work each groove to make passes. Thiel moved into the top ten in only the first half of the race. After passing for the eighth spot, Scotty came out of turn four and something broke going down the front stretch. He tried to slow the car down but didn’t have any breaks what so ever. He tried to get the car turned away from the wall but did not have any power steering either. At the last minute, Thiel was able to get the car sideways and slapped the wall really hard. After the second hit, the car climbed the wall and rolled a couple times. Scotty was okay but the car on the other hand, was extremely torn up.

“Something broke going down the front stretch, couldn’t stop and couldn’t turn. I was headed right for the wall head on and got it to turn sideways at the last second. Slapped the wall and thought I was going to be able to save it but it hit again and climbed and went over. Just is unfortunate for our team, we had a solid night going for us against these 410 guys. 18th to 8th just a little over half way. It was a top 5 car for sure tonight. We have to reground this week, get a new car together, and go after the big one at Open Wheel Nationals next weekend.” Scotty commented after the wreck.

The team worked all day Saturday to put a new car together. They were able to take it to a local track and make a few hot laps with it to make sure the motor was okay and get a feel of the car. Scotty and the team were happy with everything. They will prepare all week long for this coming weekends Open Wheel National event at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, WI. The winner of that event will walk away with a $5,000 payday!

If you are unable to make it to the race this weekend it will be available online from XSAN TV for FREE! Check them out online at www.xsan.tv The event will be on for both Friday and Saturday nights!
