Scotty Thiel – Seals the Deal at Open Wheel Nationals!
Scotty Thiel and the entire Scott Thiel Motorsports team worked hard all week to prepare a new car for the weekends $5,000 to win, Open Wheel Nationals event at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. After struggling early on, Scotty prevailed through and took the lead with only nine laps left to capture the 2nd Annual Open Wheel Nationals and a $5000 dollar payday!
After picking an 11 pill to start out Friday night’s portion of the Open Wheel Nationals, Thiel started on the outside front row of the heat race event. The field went on to take the green flag and Scotty would cross over in turn one to take the lead down the back stretch. A yellow flag flew and a complete restart was ordered. On the second attempt, Scotty wasn’t able to get the jump and would fall into the second position and rode in that spot for the next ten laps. After the invert, Thiel would have to start 9th in the challenge race event. The field set the track for the 14 lap challenge race and weather was going to play an issue. The green flag flew and the field was off. Scotty worked the middle to low line all race long and was able to move up several positions. At the half way point, Thiel was battling for the sixth position but was unable to capture the spot by the end of the race.
The rains came and so did the curfew limit so the Friday night’s portion of the Open Wheel Nationals was postponed until Saturday evening.
Scotty struggled with brake issues all Friday night and the team worked for the majority of Saturday morning to resolve the issue. After a quick hot lap session took place before going into the makeup A-main event, Thiel felt pretty well about the car. He would come into the night 11th in overall points and that’s where he would start in the 25 lap A-Main. The field came down into turn three and four and would take the green flag. Scotty worked the low line in turn one and made a pass for several positions going down the backstretch. Several cautions took place within the first half of the main and Thiel found himself in the top 5 just shy of the half way marker. After going back green, Scotty battled for the fourth spot and soon came a three wide battle for position. A red flag came out with only a few laps remaining and would reset the field. On the restart, Thiel tried to make the top side work for momentum but came up short and was settle back in the fifth spot. With only one lap to go he battled back again for the fourth spot but would cross the line in the fifth position. After going across the scales, the fourth place car came up light and would bump Thiel up one spot for the official finish.
The top six cars in overall points were locked into the night’s 35 lap, $5000 to win Open Wheel Nationals A-Main event. Thiel was just shy of the lock in by only two positions. He would have to run a heat which would go on to lock the next top four in points to the show and then the remaining ten cars came out of two different challenge races.
Scotty started on the pole of the heat race and after taking the green flag, he never looked back. Ten fast laps took place and Thiel would cross the finish line with the checkered and also an 8th place starting position for the A-Main event.
The cars pushed out on the track for fierce 35 lap Open Wheel Nationals A-main event. After getting pushed off and into their positions, they were given the command to set up for the 3 wide salute to the fans. They broke out and got lined back up quickly as they started to get anxious for the drop of the green flag. The field bunched up in turn three and four and would roar down the straight for the start of the main event. A quick caution came out for a couple cars spinning in turn one and would call for a complete restart. After getting lined back up, they came back down for the green. Scotty would the middle lane and moved up one spot going down the back stretch. It took a few laps for Thiel to get a feel for what the track had to offer. He moved up to the top groove and settled in the fifth position. Several cautions took place in the first 20 laps of the event. Scotty moved back and forth in the first half of the show and was all the way back to eighth with 15 laps to go. He searched up and down for the right groove and would make a pass up to the sixth position after the restart. Five laps later a caution flew for a car spinning in turn four. That moved Scotty up one spot into the fifth position. After going back green flag action, the top two cars made contact and bunched up the field. Scotty dove down to the bottom side of the track and took over the lead coming out of turn two! He stormed down the back stretch and took a several car lead. Rubber started to play a fact in the remaining nine laps and Scotty used that to his advantage to pull away from the field. After three laps of having the lead, Thiel pulled away by almost an entire straight. With only two laps to go, Scotty encountered some lap cars but did not hesitate one second and got around them in turn three. He would come down to take the white flag and held on coming out of turn four to cross the line as the 2nd Annual Open Wheel Nationals Champion and took home a $5,000 dollar payday!
“Oh my goodness, did that just really happen?!” Thiel said after the race. “I don’t even know what to say, I honestly didn’t think we had a chance at the half way point of this race. That last restart I was planning to go low and knew I could get a good run off the bottom but that was about it. We got the green and the leaders just bunched up going into one. Nobody went low and the door was wide open for me. This is just unbelievable! I can’t thank my crew enough for all their hard work all weekend long. They are incredible to say the least. Can’t thank my car owners enough along with all of my great marketing partners. They are all the best and deserve every bit of this win tonight!”
This race marks the one of the biggest accomplishment in the young 21 year olds racing career.
