Scotty Thiel - Struggling Encounters

Two struggling nights of racing occurred for the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team this past weekend. Night number one took place at the Wilmot Raceway were Scotty managed to finish the race but in the 13th position and Sunday evening at Angel Park in Sun Prairie, WI where he was taken out after the first corner of the A-Main event.

Saturday evening at the Wilmot Raceway was set by a poor qualifying effort as Scotty was not able to get the car to work properly. That made for a seventh place starting spot in the heat race event. A challenging race track was presented to the field for the heat race events. Scotty managed to get a great start and launched into the fifth place transfer spot going into turn one. After ten laps of green flag action was complete, Thiel earned the fourth place position and a locked in spot for the nights 35 lap A-main event.

A caution filled A-main event made for a difficult night as Scotty was stuck towards the rear of the field and was not able to get a solid green flag run with the car. He worked his way inside the top ten before contact was made by another car and Scotty spun the car out. After the restart, Scotty picked off a few cars but after the 35 laps of green flag action were complete, he rounded out the night with a 13th place finish. “It was a rough night for a lot of guys out there. We got tangled up in three and set us back again. We didn’t wreck much which not to many guys can say. It was a struggle out there.” Explained a disappointed Thiel after the race.

Sunday evening presented the IRA sprints to a track that they have not been to in 29 years, the Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI. This track is a famous midget track and the 410 Outlaw Sprints were given the chance to show what can be accomplished. Scotty and the crew prepared for a new night after a rough one at Wilmot.

Issues were presented once again as the team fought with engine issues early on. A loose nozzle line in hotlaps caused a plug to foul out later in the qualifying attempt. Scotty was not able to qualify well due to being down on power. The team got it figured out and fixed for the remaining portion of the night. After starting ninth in the heat race event, Scotty charged up to the sixth spot after ten laps of action was completed. He missed the A-Main transfer spot by one position and would be forced to run the B-main event. Due to a poor qualifying effort, Scotty would have to start in the 11th position in the B-main event. The field took the green and Scotty began to start a mission to move forward and make it into the main event. He worked both sides of the track and charged all the way up to the fourth spot in only 10 laps and rounded out the 12 lap B-main in fourth and a transfer spot in the 30 lap A-main event. The car was good and the crew didn’t change much for the main event. After the field was lined up they quickly went to green flag action. Scotty started in the 19th position and pulled alongside of the field going into turn one. The field got to the middle of turns one and two and Scotty was hit and put into the infield. That ended the night for Thiel as too much damaged was caused to the front end of the car.

A short night of A-main action and a wrecked race car ended the struggling weekend for the STM #64 team. A long weekend of racing takes place this coming weekend starting out on Friday night at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, WI. Saturday evening brings the team farther north to ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI. And finally, Sunday night brings the team a couple hours south to Eagle Valley Raceway in Jim Falls, WI.
