Scotty Thiel – Tough Break at Plymouth Speedway
A cold and rainy Saturday night of racing led the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to the Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana with the Sprint on Dirt 360 series. This was the first visit to the speedway for the team and driver Scotty Thiel. That did not leave any setbacks as Scotty stormed to a huge lead in the heat race and would capture the victory. The main was going great until a late race tangle up happened between Scotty and a lap car as he was battling for the lead.
The rains stopped around 5:30PM and the track crew at Plymouth Speedway worked hard to prepare a great track for the SOD sprint series. Scotty started on the outside front row of the heat race event and as soon as the green flag dropped he did not hesitate on bit. After grabbing the lead coming off of turn two, he checked out and never looked back. After the invert was drawn, Scotty would start out in the sixth position for the nights 25 lap A-main event. The crew prepared the car for Scotty as they all knew they were quick enough to get to the front. The cars were pushed off and began to line up for the main event. After coming out of turn four when the green flag dropped, Scotty did not waste any time and made it three wide up the middle going into turn one. He stuck the nose further than the other two cars and launched into the fourth spot coming out of turn two. He continued to charge but wasn’t able to gain more ground after a few laps of action. An early caution set the field up for a restart. Scotty took advantage of that and capitalized another position going into turn one. He was now in the third position and began to charge for second. He managed to get a great run off of turn four and passed for second before another caution would come out as the leader was caught up in a wreck. This advanced Thiel to the second spot but knew he was quicker than the car he just passed, now the current leader. After going back to green flag action, Thiel didn’t hesitate and battled for the lead coming out of turn two. He dove down low and made the move for the lead. He began to set his momentum and pulled away from the field. A caution came out on lap 15 which took away from the huge lead Thiel had built up. They went back to green and Scotty continued to do what he was doing all race long. A quick caution came out again a few laps later and bunched the field back up. After returning to green flag action, Thiel pulled out to the lead again but got into lap traffic really quick which slowed down his lead. With five laps left, the battle for the lead began to occur. Scotty got shuffled up the track due to going around a lap car and gave the lead up but quickly capitalized and got back to the lead the next lap. He lost the lead with only three laps to go going into turn one. He crossed the leader back over and it was a drag race down the backstretch. The leader went high around a lap car and Scotty shot down low, under the lapper. At the last second the lap car that was in the middle of the track turned down when Scotty was entering the corner on the low side and the two tangled up, ultimately ending Thiel’s chances of capturing the victory. He would end up finishing in the 15th position after a green white checkered race finished. “The night was looking to be really good. We had a quick car all race long. Rico (Abreu) got under me after that one restart when we got into lap traffic. It was a good battle. He was quicker in one but I feel that we had him covered in four. Not sure what happed exactly in turn three but I thought I was going to be clear but the lapper turned left once Rico got to him and that cost us the night. It was really disappointing for my guys as they worked hard all night in this cold to give me the best car possible. This isn’t the way I wanted to end the season out but never know what can happen out there…” Scotty mentioned after the disappointing finish.
That race would conclude the 2014 Scott Thiel Motorsports racing season. The team battled 34 races this year with 2 wins, 11 top 5’s and 20 top 10 finishes. Engine issued haunted the team all year long with the IRA series and dampened the results as they had to rely on their 360 engine to do the job.
