Scotty Thiel – Final Northern Swing Top 10’s

A 6.5 hour haul to the farthest northwest corner of Wisconsin led the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to Superior, WI on Friday September 5th to the Amsoil Speedway for the Northern Nationals. Scotty would come from 16th to 10th in the A-main event. Saturday September 6th, the team headed south to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI for the Jerry Richert Memorial which paid $7,000 to win! After starting out in the 12th position, Scotty charged hard and ended up finishing 8th right in contention for a top five as the leaders were all nose to tail in the final laps.

Amsoil Speedway was a first for STM as they added it to the list of race tracks attended after racing on Friday night. Scotty went out for qualifying and laid down a 13.796 lap time which was fourth quick out of the 23 cars in attendance and an IRA career best thus far in 2014. After starting out in the fifth spot for the heat race, Scotty charged hard going into turn one. The lead car spun in the middle of the corner and Scotty had nowhere to go and go caught up in the tangle up. The crew went to work on the car in the work area but determined there was too much damage to fix in a short period of time pushed it back to the trailer. They went to work and fixed the car for the 30 lap A-main event. With IRA scoring and how well Scotty qualified early on he started 16th in the A-main event. The field took the green but a quick caution came out for a car spinning in turns one and two. A complete restart was called over the field. After trying the start again, the field was able to get a few laps in before another caution came out. Thiel struggled early on with the car but was able to get a momentum going later on in the race. He began to work the high side of the track and moved forward in the field. After 30 laps of green flag action were complete, Scotty found himself in the tenth position.

“It was a solid night overall. We qualified well finally. I wish we could have started further up but the car was not handling well all race long and I just held onto what I could.” Stated Thiel after the night’s event.

The team headed south on Saturday night to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI for the annual Richert Memorial event. Scotty went out 20th in qualifying out of 36 cars and placed a time of 12.434 which was 11th quick overall. In the heat race event, Scotty would start out in the fourth position and after the field took the green Scotty charged hard into turn one. The lead cars went down low and Scotty utilized the opportunity of a wide open top groove and took the lead going down the back stretch. A caution came out for a car spinning in turn three which called for a complete restart and forced Thiel back to the original starting position. After starting the race once again, Scotty battle for the lead right away and took it over on lap two. He led for a couple laps before a small bobble in turn four cost him the lead. He charged back but settled for a second place finish after ten laps were complete. That finish would transfer Thiel to the A-main event and have a 12th place starting position.

The field was set for the 30 lap A-main event and they presented the crowd a four-wide salute as fireworks rocketed into the sky. The smoke settled and the field took the green flag coming out of turn four. Thiel maintained his starting spot for a few laps and finally settled into a groove and began to pick cars off. A few early red flags came out but the field settled down after 12 laps were complete. Thiel found himself in the tenth spot and was moving forward after working both racing grooves. He battled his way up to the eighth spot and caught the leaders only a few laps later. 4th through 8th were all nose to tail with only five laps to go. Scotty reeled the cars in closer but ran out of time as the checkered flag few and would end up eighth after 30 laps of racing action was complete.

“We qualified decent for how late we went out tonight. The heat race was a pretty intense battle. Experience out ran us there. The car was working real well in the main once some of the fuel burned off. I wish we could have had a few more laps. I feel we could have got within the top 5 but another top 10 is good for us.” Scotty commented after the main event.

Next up on the STM schedule is this coming Saturday night at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI.
