Outlaw and Wilmot Recap

A beautiful Wednesday night set way for the STM team as they traveled down to Kokomo, Indiana for the World of Outlaw event. This was Scotty’s second appearance with the Outlaws and was hoping for solid results. After qualifying 22nd out of 39 cars in attendance and racing his way through the last chance showdown, Thiel successfully made the WoO feature event! The team traveled to Wilmot Raceway then Saturday night with the IRA while Scotty qualified very well but struggled with the car handling in the feature event but managed to bring home a top 10 finish.

Scotty drew a 4 pill for World of Outlaw qualifying on Wednesday night at Kokomo Speedway. That placed him to be the second car out of the night among the strong field of 39 cars. After laying down an 11.626 lap time, it would go on to be 22nd quick. The top 16 cars in time made the heat race inversion but Thiel’s time set him to be third row of the heat race event. On the start of the heat, Scotty was able to get a good jump and charged into the fifth spot going in to turn one. He battled his way for the first lap and tried to make the pass for the fourth spot on the bottom but ruined his momentum he built up. Struggling to get back to the top side of the track, he fell back several spots into the seventh spot. He charged his way ahead but was unable to make the top five transfer after the 10 lap event and would be forced to come through the last chance showdown.

The crew scrambled to get the car ready for the last chance race where Scotty would start in the fourth spot since his qualifying efforts were decent among the remaining cars in the field. At the drop of the green Scotty charged in to turn one. The field spread out going down the backstretch and Thiel settled into the fourth and final transfer spot. He knew all he had to do was stay there all 12 laps and he would be fine. He moved around the track over the course of the race to search for a better groove but maintained his position. After 12 laps of straight green flag action, Scotty would cross the line in the fourth position and would transfer into the nights 40 lap A-main World of Outlaw event!

The track remained fairly tacky all night long and after starting the main in the 22nd position, Scotty knew the lead cars would be lapping pretty quickly on the small track. The field gave the four wide salute to the fans and then proceeded to get lined back up to take the green flag. The 25 car field bunched up and launched out of turn four as the green flag flew. Scotty worked the low line for a few laps and then started to move up into the middle groove. He passed a few cars early on and was sitting inside the top 20. The lead cars began to catch and lap the back end of the field within six or seven laps. Scotty held his ground but would get put a lap down. He still was racing for position with the back runners but not much passing was occurring for any of the cars. Scotty pulled the car into the infield on lap 23 as he was not making any more ground and did not want to get involved in a wreck as a few red flags came out over the course of the first half of the event. All in all, it was a good night for the STM team as their overall goal was to make the A-main. The final result was 21st place.

The crew headed back home and prepared for Saturday nights racing action which would take place at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI with the IRA. Last time the team made an appearance they had a solid run happening in the A-main but then destroyed a car after getting t-boned down the backstretch. Scotty drew a 15 pill which sent him out for IRA Qualifying in the tenth position. After putting down an 11.868 lap time, it was fourth quick out of the 33 cars in attendance. That placed Scotty to start sixth in the heat race event with IRA heat race inversion format. The field took the green as charged down the front stretch. A tricky track came over pretty quickly in the heat races and it was difficult to get grip in the corners. Scotty battled for the fifth and final transfer spot for nine laps before finally setting up the move and passed for the final spot going down the backstretch on the last lap. He would transfer into the A-main event and make the inversion. During the inversion draw, a 2 pill was picked which would invert the first two rows, placing Scotty to start third in the 30 lap A-main event.

A very slick race track presented the 24 car field of IRA 410 Outlaw Sprint cars. The field bunched up and prepared to take the green. As the green flag flew, they bunched up tight going into turn one. Scotty was pinched on the bottom of the track for the first few laps and fell back to the fifth spot. He was trying different lines but was unable to get off the corners like he had hoped. He moved up to the top of the track and struggled up in that groove as well. Several cautions came across over the first 20 laps of the event and Scotty was still struggling to move back forward. He did everything he could do to make the car drive off the corner better but was unable to make that work as he fell back several more spots at the end. When 30 laps of green flag action finished, Thiel would end up crossing the line in the 10th position. “Our night started off well with a 4th quick in qualifying. I was thinking we would be set up pretty well all night long after that. I’m not sure what happened in the main. I thought the adjustments we made for what the track was doing would be perfect but I just struggled every lap to get off the corner. It was a different track tonight than normal. Just gets frustrating when you have solid runs early in the night but you can’t finish them in the main.” Stated a disappointed Thiel after the main event.

Next on tap, the team travels a little closer to home as the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints come to invade the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI on Saturday night! Keep up to date with Scott Thiel Motorsports all race day long on their Facebook, www.facebook.com/ScottThielMotorsports

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
