Scotty Thiel – Top 5 Trio Weekend!

A grinding three day weekend started off Thursday at Angell Park Speedway for Scotty and the STM #64 team. This was the makeup event from the previous AllStar/IRA Co Sanction event. After starting off strong in qualifying, Scotty would dominate in the main event until the last six laps changed everything. Friday night, the team travelled to Oshkosh Speedzone where they would struggle early but make a strong comeback in the heat and main event. The final night resided at Wilmot Raceway where another strong qualifying run helped set up for a very good A-main result.

Thursday night presented the IRA at Angell Park Speedway for a $5,000 to win special. Scotty would go out sixth in the qualifying order and would put down a 12.181 lap time which was second quick overall for the night out of the 30 cars in attendance. He would battle with Tony Stewart in the heat race until losing power steering but would hold on to finish third and transfer him into the night’s 30 lap main event. During the redraw, Scotty picked the outside front row starting spot pill and would line up next to Tony yet again. The green flap dropped for the field and they charged into turn one. Scotty fell back to third early on as he would work the high side of the track. He quickly began to rebound and charge forward on lap four. He picked up one position and would track down the leader of Stewart. Using lap traffic to his advantage, Scotty rocketed around Stewart on lap number 10 and never looked back. He pulled a commanding lead after as he navigated through lap traffic very well. With a full straight-a-way lead, there was only six laps to go. A red flag came out before completing lap 25 and would reset the field. After going back to green flag action, Scotty drove in the middle of the track to take the line away from the second place car of Balog. They drove side by side down the back stretch but Thiel prevailed going into turn three. He would go on to work the top side of the track but Balog slid by and Scotty tried all he could do to capitalize but wasn’t able to keep any traction. He slid back to third position as the white flag came out. Thiel would go on to finish third as he crossed the line and completed the 30 lap main event. “We got beat, that’s all I can say. I knew we were golden early on but that restart wasn’t what I needed. The tires cooled down and sealed over and I was out to lunch on the restart. The 17 drove a good race and got me on the slide job battle. Third is good but disappointing after leading that long. We’ll try to make up for it tomorrow night.” Stated a very disappointed, Thiel.

Friday night brought the team to Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI. Dry track conditions made for a difficult qualifying attempt. Scotty tried something different with his line and it didn’t work out well. After a 15.714 lap time, it was 20th quick out of the 27 cars signed into the night. Determined to capitalize in the heat, Scotty went to work to help make the proper changes to move forward in the heat. He would start seventh in the heat race event. The green flag dropped and Scotty charged the bottom on turn one. He came out of turn two in the fourth position and continued his battle forward. He slowly picked off a car over the next couple of laps and would find himself running second with just three laps to go. He was unable to get the leader at the end but finishing second would surely help the starting lineup for the 30 lap main event. The A-main is lined up first by the three heat race winners and the next fastest seven cars in time trials. That completes the top ten in the lineup which is then followed by the heat race finish cars. So, Scotty finished second and was the first eligible car to start behind the first ten cars in the main. Therefore, he would start 11th in the main event. The green flag dropped and the main event was under way. Scotty worked the low side of the track early on and picked up a few positions but would then charge around the top of the track and begin his way forward. He charged his way up into the top five as the race would stay green all 30 laps and he would cross the finish line in the fourth position picking up seven spots overall in the main. “It was a pretty good night for us after doing horrible in qualifying. I knew we had to make up some ground in the heat in order to start decent in the main. We needed the yellow from last night, tonight, to get the field bunched back up and maybe have a better shot at a top three but it was still a respectable night for us.” Mentioned Scotty after the night.

The final night of the weekend brought the team to Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI. Scotty qualified with a 13.287 which was third quick out of 28 cars signed into the night. Scotty would go on to start fourth in the heat race and finish fourth as the track was a difficult one to tackle being a little rough in spots. Scotty would make the redraw and pick the sixth starting position pill. The field took the green and was underway for the 30 lap main event. Scotty tried to make the top work in turn one but the cushion was a traitorous one as it continued to build up bigger and bigger. He held on to the sixth position but would quickly pick up a couple spots early on in the race. A caution came out on lap 12 which would regroup the field. On the restart, Thiel was able to capitalize and take over the third position. Several more cautions came out over the course of the next six laps but the field would finally stay green for the final 12 laps of the race. Scotty would get close to the second place car but was unable to get enough drive to complete the pass. He had one last chance at the end but came up short and finished the 30 lap event in the third position. “Oh man, I don’t know what to say here. The track was tricky all race long. I thought we had something work on the bottom in four but I lost some ground and couldn’t make it all back up. My guys gave me a really good car but I made some mistakes that costed us some potential ground. Overall it still was a solid weekend for us going 3rd, 4th and 3rd tonight but I feel we had a couple of wins that didn’t come through. We’ll focus for next weekend.” Scotty said after the race.

The team will regroup and prepare for a double header this weekend starting off Saturday night at the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI. They will then follow that up on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI. Last year, Thiel would double up Wins on this weekend.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
