Larry has always enjoyed anything with a motor starting at a young age. Racing is in his blood after all. It all started with Larry’s great-grandpa, Skeet Gibson. Skeet was a top-class mechanic and owner of the famous Sprint car, The Twister. The torch was passed down to his son, Robert “Hoot” Gibson, a superb mechanic, as well as a recent inductee of the AZ Motorsports Hall of Fame, which joined him with his father Skeet.
Many years were spent at Manzanita Speedway for the Gibson family. Larry always enjoyed going there to watch his father, Wayne Gibson, race Midgets and Sprint cars. It’s where Larry got his start working on Sprints at the age of 13. By 17 he had worked on three championship teams including, Rickie “Super” Gaunt’s 2004 SCRA and NWWC championships and Jeremy Sherman’s 2007 ASCA championship.
In 2006, Larry decided to take his love for racing to a new level – by becoming a racer himself. He started out in mini-Sprints, running a limited schedule, with car owner Tommy Gibson. The next year, he was able to run a full schedule with the mini-Sprints, finish 16th in the point standings for the year.
In 2008, Larry was running a full schedule – a racer for Adam Young in a Midget, a handful of races in a sponsored Dwarf car, as well as in his own mini-Sprint. It was a big year for Larry, having received his first win in the Dwarf car, as well as runner-up for Rookie of the Year in the Midget division. In 2009, he traded the Midget to race for Leland Michaels in a Sprint car, continuing in the Dwarf car and mini-Sprint. Larry finished 14th in the Sprint car point standings.
2010 and 2011 were quiet years, running a limited schedule in his mini-Sprint. Feeling a bigger need for speed, Larry and his car owner Tommy traded the mini-Sprint in for a Challenge Cup Sprint car in 2012. Making 2012 a learning year, Larry and his team are ready to take on any track and racer in the 2013 season.
