First Win for the Blue Deuce
The Larry Gibson Racing team earned their first win of the year at Canyon Speedway Park on July 27th. After an uneventful heat race consisting of the 2x cruising in the middle of the pack, Larry was to start in the fourth position of the main event. He was able to grab the lead on the fourth lap and it seemed to be smooth sailing from there - until a yellow. Crew chief and father Wayne Gibson couldn't help but try and keep a calm exterior when the yellow flag was thrown.
As the green flag flew again, the next couple laps consisted of tight, neck to neck racing. But Larry was able to hold onto the lead and was soon a straight away ahead of the rest of the pack.
"I've never been so nervous in my life," Larry Gibson reminisces. "I knew I could win it, but it was all in my hands. It's a tough feeling to have, to know it all relies on you."
Within the last two laps of the race, Larry soon ran into some lapped traffic. Easily avoiding disaster, he cruised passed the others and saw the white flag waving. The crowd was in an uproar, waiting to see if Larry Gibson would indeed capture his first win here on a unseasonable cool summer night. The long wait was finally over as the checkered flag was thrown as Larry crossed the finish line. Close loved ones raced to victory lane to celebrate with Larry who wanted nothing more than to stand up on the roll cage, proud of his victory.
His victory is not one done by himself. The Larry Gibson Racing team has many to thank and be grateful to for support.
